Dutch city plans to extend into neighboring lake

By | July 8, 2012, 12:28 PM PDT

In fighting for the role of World Horticultural Expo host for the year 2022, the city of Almere means business.

The Dutch city has commissioned architectural firm MVRDV to design an artificial pavilion that would extend its city center out onto the neighboring Lake Marken.

Aiming for sustainability in all measures, the concept would allow the city to host the six-month long festival while leaving behind the infrastructure to create permanent homes, offices, and a new university. The newly created buildings should help ease some of the cramped conditions in Almere’s current city center, WebUrbanist reports.

Covered in a patchwork of gardens, pavilions, and greenhouses, MVRDV hopes that the 111-acre plot will be “both literally green and sustainable.”

“We dream of making… a symbiotic world of people, plants and animals,” says Winy Maas of MVRDV. “Can this symbiosis between city and countryside offer essential argumentation to the global concerns regarding urbanisation and consumption? Can we realise in the next ten years an exemplary ‘green’ city which realises this synthesis?”
