By | May 25, 2010, 7:43 AM PDT

If visions of the smart grid play out, utilities will really be running one big network. Cisco, seeing that trend, has launched a router and switch designed for the smart grid.

Cisco on Tuesday rolled out its Connected Grid portfolio. Cisco’s idea is to offer routers and switches that can deliver electric power to businesses and homes will better managing energy usage.

The routers and switches, which Cisco calls ruggedized, are designed to integrate Internet Protocol communications with grid monitoring. The Connected Grid portfolio builds on Cisco’s current lineup for the smart grid.

In a statement, Cisco detailed the 2010 Connected Grid Router (CGR 2010) and 2520 Connected Grid Switch (CGS 2520). The router and switch are designed to capture and analyze data from multiple intelligent devices in the substation. The smart grid gear runs on existing Cisco parts such as its IOS software and network security features.
