3M unveils integrated optical films, eyes revamping LCD backlights

By | May 12, 2011, 9:46 AM PDT

3M on Thursday launched a new integrated optical film that aims to improve LCD screen backlighting, make the supply chain more efficient and cut down on carbon usage.

These integrated optical films, known as ‘Collimating Multi-layer Optical Film’ (CMOF), ditch free-floating films and the light guide from LED LCD backlights.

With CMOF, 3M has been able to cut the amount of light management material in backlights. 3M has also cooked up new backlight architecture.

In a nutshell, 3M’s move allows a one-step assembly for manufacturing panels. Meanwhile, 3M’s optical films will allow for fewer LEDs to illuminate a screen.

3M hopes to use its new optical films in monitors, TVs and LCD signs.
