250,000 Swedes allergic to mobile phone radiation

By | March 8, 2010, 8:07 AM PST

Some 250,000 people in Sweden are allergic to the radio waves that are emitted when someone makes a call with a cellular mobile phone, according to a new report.

Called electro-hypersensitivity, the condition means the afflicted have severe physical reactions — from dizziness, nausea and headaches to breathing problems, heart palpitations and flat-out fainting — to the electromagnetic radiation produced by consumer electronics such as computers, televisions and cell phones.

According to a stunning new article in Popular Science, Sweden is the only country in the world to recognize EHS as a functional impairment. The article explains the plight of Per Segerbäck, one of the three percent of Swedes with the condition.

Once, while on a sailboat with friends, he recalls, he was on the front deck when, unknown to him, someone made a call belowdecks. Headache, nausea, unconsciousness. When Segerbäck is within range of an active cellphone (safe distances vary because different makes and models produce different radiation levels), he experiences the feeling that there is “not enough room in my skull for my brain.”

In Sweden, EHS sufferers are entitled to similar rights and services as the blind and deaf, and can have metal shielding installed in their homes free of charge from the local government.

The mobile phone industry says scientific evidence overwhelmingly indicates that wireless devices are safe. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, the American Cancer Society and the World Health Organization agree — and flat brain-cancer rates have thus far confirmed that assessment.

Segerbäck for 20 years was a telecommunications engineer at Ellemtel, a division of Ericsson. “He was, as a result, up to his eyeballs in a non-ionizing radiation bath, from computers, fluorescent lights and the telecom antenna located right outside his window,” Popular Science writes.

His colleagues complained of similar symptoms. The company responded by offering them protective suits, modifying their living spaces and even vehicles to accommodate for their sensitivity. Ericsson produced a report in 1993 about the condition that underlined the necessity to combat it.

Still, Segerbäck was let go in 1999 for an inability to perform his work duties. Now he lives on a cottage in a nature reserve 75 miles northeast of Stockholm — far away from gadget-produced radiation.

Do cell phones cause brain cancer? So far, no one’s been able to conclusively prove it. But the body’s cells are a source of electrical activity, and the emergence of the condition indicates that we might not fully understand what we’ve created.

What an interesting story.
Even strange i would say (i wouldn't believe it without the wiki link you have put there)
we are @ http://www.wisenv.com developed a protection from radiation and our product was about protecting yourself from your iphone SAR. we did not imagine that your cell phone can also harm others (in a way that can be felt immediately).
I guess that cell phones are becoming more and more like cigarettes.

This condition is getting more serious and more prevalent...
Any wonder why?

Look at all the antennas near where you live...
(Add to these all the cell phones and all the Wi-Fi)

Check out www.antennasearch.com -- Put in any address near you...Don't need to use real address. They don't ask for email or anything either.

The other hidden danger
There is no doubt in my mind that cell phone radiation is dangerous and this article confirms it especially for children below teenage years. My main concern is that everybody keeps looking at cell phones but another huge problem is DECT cordless phones that are in most households. Many people were not even aware that they are transmitting pulsed microwave radiation 24/7 even if a call is not being made. The base stations are emitting a constant stream of pulsed microwave radiation all the time. At least with cordless phones there are low radiation alternatives (lowradiaion.co.uk). It is easy for the industry to say there is no conclusive proof if you open your eyes there?s plenty.

RE: 250,000 Swedes allergic to mobile phone radiation
and now for something completely different.
this really sounds like a state of mass-induced hysteria. similar things have happened before. for all those who believe in one or another conspiracy theories, this is the kind of thing that races through a society at the speed of light. there does not need to be any proof, just anecdotal stories, true or not, and the world goes mad.

Possibility that sensitizing agents can be part of this response or perhaps?

RE: 250,000 Swedes allergic to mobile phone radiation
what about if the allergic bunch is just a group who shows symptoms more immediately and strongly than other, but all of us are somehow impacted by the radiation. After all, we're saying that these radiations do something to the body, and that some peopl react visibly and immediately.
It does not take much imagination to hypothesize that such radiation may be harmful to a much bigger number of people over the long term - just that we do not see it directly.

RE: 250,000 Swedes allergic to mobile phone radiation
I am a doctor and edcuator in the area of chemical and electrical sensitviity - sounds off the wall but very real and becomng more common amoung the avergae women more often than men. Holding the cell phone in your hand and having it heat up is s sign. Also feeling uncomfortable sitting next to the freidge when on, or near a large CVRT computor or TV, flourescent lights are typically causing headaches to those who are sensitive. Often assiociated withdifficulty with perfume, diesel exhaust and other smells and chemicals. ES is in 3% of the pop and CS is in 15% and 4 to 1 women! Anyone with questions can look at my website or email me.

Pong phone cases
There are ways to reduce levels of EMR exposure, such as only talking on your phone when you have a strong signal, don t hold the phone directly to your head (which mobile phone manufactures warn against in user manuals).
Also use a Pong case, these are the only scientifically proven technology in cases that reduce radiation exposure by redirecting it away from the head and body.
