Get your own jet pack!

By | March 10, 2010, 6:47 PM PST

Thanks to Glenn Martin, you can own a jet pack for about $75,000.

It’s light weight, so you don’t need a pilot’s license. All you need to do is put in 40 solid minutes of training. As as long as you have some coordination skills, you could be flying in no time.

Enter The Martin Jetpack, a 200-horsepower, dual-propeller flying device that runs up to 60 mph on a five-gallon tank of gas, giving its passenger a 30-minute joyride.

The only unappealing thing about the jet pack is the obnoxious noise it makes. But I can imagine how fun it would be to fly. While the jet pack in this video doesn’t really take off, the newest model can lift you 1.5 miles into the air.

Martin’s 30 year hobby is just now entering pre-production somewhere in New Zealand, thanks to a multi-million dollar investment.

And there is already a waiting list.

Beyond satisfying people’s dreams of flying, the jet packs might have a more practical use in the military or be used as a rescue vehicle in emergency situations.

RE: Get your own jet pack!
This article has some annoying imprecision.

First, how much of the 30 minute fuel capacity is consumed getting to 1.5 mile altitude?

If no extra fuel were required, 60 mph for 30 minutes gives a 30 mile range. Has that been tested?

Finally, why is the light weight a factor in whether a pilot's license is required (or not)?

It's not a jet pack. The unit uses two propellers. While they do direct
two air-streams downward, the device hardly qualifies as a jet.

Wow some people got the triple Latte this morning...obviously needs the low altitude parachute to deal with the annoying empty tank at 5000 feet! Kind of looks like a rich mans Darwin award?

Smart?
Let's see... 60 mph for 30 minutes would be 30 miles.

30 miles on 5 gallons would be 6 mpg.

I agree that search and rescue would be an excellent use for such a device.

Affordable???
I guess if you can afford 75 grand for this device, you can afford 6 mpg!

Of course, you will have to factor in the cost of dual cochlear implants...

I'm thinking search & rescue would be required. Especially if it takes 29 minutes to go 1.5 mi. up. 6mpg? Gosh, my land ark Buick gets 3x better. Kind of fails the carbon footprint race.

Ok, I'll say it...
I want one! What a toy!

It's a big boy toy, folks. Quit thinking in practical terms. It's about as practical as a lot of our other toys. It's not. But, practical isn't the point, now is it? It's no less practical than a 60mph bass boat, but that doesn't stop people from buying them, and enjoying them beyond all practical reason.

Oh, I want one I want one!
Of course, I have a LOT of better things to do with $75,000 (if I had it) than an...inCREDible toy like that.

RE: Get your own jet pack!
There is a jet pack that is a real jet pack currently being messed with. Do a YouTube search for "turbine jet pack" (YouTube channel "gasturbine101" view code "gBw7ycXJyAE"). It uses a mini jet engine and ducted exhaust and looks a bit like a fat RocketDyne Rocket Pack (the one most uneducated folks call a jet pack - 43 Seconds max flight :P). Same times and less noisy (the turbine is, after all, a turbine). Another gentleman did a similar unit using 10 directed micro jet turbines, but his videos are private.
