Your fast food does not have to kill you

By | May 28, 2010, 8:02 AM PDT

Whenever an interest group or government official has stood up in the last year to suggest making food healthier, there has been a predictable backlash.

You can’t do that. It’s un-American, Big Brother telling us what we can do. I’ll give up that french fry when you pry it from my cold dead hand.

Well, Dariush Mozaffarian of Harvard and two colleagues from the Center for Science in the Public Interest have a reply to that.

You can have your french fry and live longer, too.

Their letter to the New England Journal of Medicine is teasing a larger study of food and health, but it has an important message.

With a little jawboning, McDonald’s cut the trans fat in its french fries to zero, and cut saturated fat nearly in half. Gorton’s cut out the trans fats without adding to the total fat load on their fish sticks.

Drop by Mickey D’s at lunch today and see if you notice a difference.

Trans fats, if you have forgotten, are most often presence in things like shortening and margarine, which have been chemically treated to make them shelf stable. Trans fats do occur naturally, but only in small quantities. When these products first came out they were thought to be heart-healthy — President Eisenhower was famously given margarine after a heart attack.

Things are not yet perfect. The American Heart Association recommends just 16 grams of saturated fat per day in a 2,000 gram per day diet. Even one order of those McDonald’s fries will give you one-quarter of your daily load of fat.

But it is the large order.

The news isn’t all good. Grocery foods are actually increasing total fat in order to make up for limits on trans fats. An Entenmann chocolate donut (I have sinned many times in this regard) now has more than twice the fat it did before, because the company swapped extra saturated fat for the trans fats.

Next up on the health jawboning list is salt. The plan is to encourage a slow reduction in salt, roughly 10% a year, until levels fall to those of 30 years ago

We’ll see if the industry cooperates and, more important, whether you can tell the difference.

I'm disgusted by that photo. The parents of those two kids should be neutered as they don't deserve kids.

Must cost a fortune to feed them that way. No problem if they carry on wont have to worry about school or college fees though...

I feel like adopting the poor kids in that photo. They're young enough to get in shape and have their growing bodies recover without any hanging skin. Raw veggies, kids. It'll save your life. And don't tell me you can't feed kids a vegan diet. Done properly, their health will blow your mind. My whole family (including my kids) are vegan and they excel in both academics and athletics. Don't wait for grocery chains and restaurants to catch up - act now, because it's up to you to change, and always will be.

The photo
The picture is a relatively old one and I need to work on finding its
original source. But it was in our files so I ran with it.

As to forcing kids to become vegan. I consider that somewhat
extreme. You don't know the kids' situation (and neither do I).
They may live in a "food desert" -- a poor area where nutritious
food isn't available for miles around.

Before we condemn people let's consider offering alternatives.

RE: Your fast food does not have to kill you
the new mc d fries suck. they tast like crap. i want my food to tast good and that is what the old fries did. i saw that pic on the net a long time ago and he likely grew up to be just another normal person when the baby fat wore off. think its time that we look the the true culprit the individual matabolism. plus the fact that most folks that are a little heavy really dont care. its called mother nature and you cant fool her. we have a minority of people who are grossly overweight and they cram that down our throat while all of the rest of us have to suffer. get big brother out of my life. its none of his business what i eat. but that is what we have developed to in all phases or our lives. punnish the masses because we cant figure out how to control the few offenders. and guess who suffers most in all casses.

RE: Your fast food does not have to kill you
Trans fat naturally occurs in some foods, like butter, but are also formed in the processing of some foods where product texture and shelf life are desired. I?ve learned a lot about this subject because I work with the National Association of Margarine Manufacturers. In addition, heart disease runs in my family so I?ve got a personal interest in this subject as well.

Using new technologies, soft margarine manufacturers have met the challenge and eliminated or reduced trans fat in soft margarine products (also known as ?buttery spreads?), making a good product even better. In fact, almost every soft margarine product now shows ?0 grams trans fats? on its label. In addition to great taste and convenience, buttery spreads contribute to lower blood cholesterol levels when substituted for butter and it contains vitamin E and essential fatty acids. When comparing soft margarine to butter, many soft margarine products are the recommended alternative as stated by of the American Heart Association, as well as the Federal government?s National Cholesterol Education Program. So, restricting salt will bring a new malady...hyper-thyroidism.
In today's world, most of the people get their iodine from salt. Reduce salt and you reduce your iodine intake.
And have you looked at one of those "healthy" soups that claims to have lower salt? Look at what they replace the soduim Chloride with....Potassium Chloride! That's just as bad as salt, and some say even worse! And Potassium tastes horrible! When I eat one of those soups, my mouth feels like I just got finished chewing on a book of matches!

You're wrong. There is ample proof that too much salt damages
your health.

Just because something is healthy why taken in moderation does
not mean you can't overdose on it.

Our increase in salt intake is matched by the industry's increased
use of salt in the last 30 years.

Our collective increase in weight and our increased intake of salt
have occurred in the last 30 years, as fast food makers and food
manufacturers have increased their use of fructose and salt.

We can change things. Or we can die.

If margarine makers can deal with reality I think the rest of the food
industry can, too.

Please. There is no threat of hyper thyroidism by returning salt
intake to its 1978 level. It's a stupid and lame excuse for doing what
needs to be done to make our manufactured foods healthier.
