Will vaccines make sex safer?

By | September 4, 2009, 11:29 AM PDT

AIDs, HPV, and other sexually-transmitted diseases have been a blessing for social conservatives.

In guarding against these illnesses, social conservatives can also reinforce a message that sex is bad and the 1960s were an evil time.

News alert. Sex is good. The 1960s were a mixed blessing, on balance an advance. And news from the vaccination front shows we may soon put fear in the past, at least for some hippies’ grandchildren.

First, Science reports today that new antibodies have been found that protect against AIDS, better known as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The antibodies were found in Africa, where the disease is most prevalent, and could re-start the search for vaccines that ended in failure in 2007.

The big news here is that the antibodies seem effective against three-quarters of the known strains of HIV, and bind to an accessible portion of the virus’ DNA. It’s 10 times more powerful than any antibody found before.

Vaccines made with the antibodies could thus protect people from many different strains of the disease, slowing the infection rate and giving scientists a chance to destroy it completely.

The other good news involves a vaccine I have covered extensively at ZDNet Healthcare, Merck’s Gardasil. Its use on young girls has been highly controversial, but the good news today is it works on boys too. It seems to prevent lesions and persistent infections.

All of which means safer sex for everyone. But you still need a warning, one the hippie couple above, photographed by Nathan Watkins and posted to Flickr, will surely agree with.

Sex is easy. It’s love that’s hard. And lasting love beats sex in every way I know.

Happy Labor Day and peace out.

Your swipe at social conservatives doesn't hold water.
Sex is good, and "social conservatives" (most likely you were referring to Christians who agree with what God has to say about how we should live, as written in the Bible) will agree that sex is good. After all, God designed it. We just believe that it should be reserved within marriage, between a man and a woman who have committed their lives to each other, and more importantly, to Christ. In this scenario, there's no need to worry about STDs or any number of other problems related to promiscuity.

The consequences of the rise in liberalism/socialism from the '60s are threatening to tear our country apart. We are divided on so many fronts, and division always causes weakness. Just look at the weak leader we're suffering under now. And he thinks he's a Christian. Yet he thinks it's okay to take from those who are hard-working and play by the rules, to provide for those who are lazy and don't want to work.

We've slaughtered over 40 million of our most innocent citizens: the unborn which were unfortunate enough to be conceived under "inconvenient" circumstances - all for the convenience of the self-absorbed, promiscuous, spoiled would-be parents who couldn't control their own urges.

The 60's also ushered in an epidemic of divorce, with one in two marriages being taken out by this abomination.

Instead of encouraging those who are struggling with same-sex attraction to pursue purity and live Christ-honoring lives, our self-indulgent culture tells them it's "normal" and that they should pursue whatever makes them happy. Well, it doesn't make them happy, and the dirty little secret is that they know they're not happy pursuing a lifestyle that is not what God intended. We say, "they're born that way", but it doesn't matter. If a BEHAVIOR not honoring to Christ, it won't make us happy in the long term either. Funny how that works.

On the scientific side, if you know anything about virus mutation, you know that these viruses aren't static. There will always be new STDs coming on the scene, and as long as people are promiscuous, people will continue to suffer and die because of sexual sin. Medicine can never keep up, no matter how much money we throw at controlling the consequences of sin. The only hope is to develop a culture which encourages people to remain abstinent outside of marriage.

So, how about some real journalism next time, instead of some hopeless hack job against people who hold a worldview that is different from yours?

RE: Will vaccines make sex safer?
roncemer,

Not everyone in the world is Christian... or Muslim, Jewish or even religious. We would all do better to accept our differences and find a balance between cooperation and competition. Thank you and your fellow Christians for being so very concerned for my soul, but it's *mine* and my decision. The Bible does frame salvation as a choice, and one that can only be made on an individual basis.

What exactly makes a vaccine or other medical treatment "bad" for a STD, but fine for treating any other disease? Why is some suffering punishment, yet other suffering is something we are supposedly held responsible for eliminating by God?

Yes, viruses will mutate regardless as to what disease they cause. If that is a reason to not research cures for current STD's, then we should give up on all of medicine. After all it's a losing battle and we will never find more effective ways to battle disease. Fortunately, the last 150 years of medical advance leads me to believe the opposite. Science works. Medicine works. It's a process, never perfect, but works and keeps getting better.

Finally, much of the problem in our country is that BOTH sides of the political spectrum are so bull headed that they can't find any middle ground. Consensus in politics is seen as weakness by both the left and the right. What made our country strong was our ability to find a common ground and work for a system where everyone can work to their own benefit. Nobody seems to want that anymore, be it left over 60's hippie or modern neo-conservative Christian.

I respect your views. It is simply that MY views are that we need to judge less, and think more.

RE: Will vaccines make sex safer?
Dear Mr. Blankenhorn,
Please don't try to speak for a group of people (social conservatives) when you really don't know what you are talking about. To generalize the way you did in this article is really showing ignorance and a willingness to use sophistry to encourage your audience's more base emotions.

Many of these vaccines you speak of are simply unnecessary in a marriage of fidelity.

Many Blessings,
Mark

RE: Will vaccines make sex safer?
Regardless of what is said, whether you like it or not, people will still continue having IT, since, as much as our need for food and shelter, it is a part of our nature and regardless of the risk of STDs. Of course, it would be nice and idealistic if only people in monogamous relationships would have it, but the reality is that even among Christians, a large proportion have had premarital sex and perhaps even with several partners, I might add, which obviously adds to the risk of contracting the STDs mentioned. I agree with Mr. Blankenhorn that is it love that is the hard thing to do, especially the everlasting kind and thus sex does not equal to love, usually.

I guess the issue with vaccines (just look at the HPV controversy) as with contraceptions is whether they actually make people more promiscuous or not, because of the perceived safety. Regardless of whether these things are available or not, people will still continue doing IT. And given all the possible consequences of the act, the question is whether to it in a safer manner or let the status quo continue ...

As with Manicsparkle, I agree that there a middle ground that needs to exist, so that if the vaccines were to be available people could actually choose to have them or not depending on their individual beliefs, etc. I believe that people should be informed before making the decision of the consequences of their choice either way. Imposing whatever choice you make on your own upon others seems to be the way of showing a lack of respect toward others and lack of tolerance of views different than your own, roncemer. After all, were are only all sinners ...

RE: Will vaccines make sex safer?
actually, people demanding a lack of accountability for themselves have been a boon to those who wish to impose their version of accountability.
Given the rates on condom usage since the hiv problem emerged, this is self-evident.

so.. 3 stats...male circumcision is about 65% effective in stopping hiv tranmission.
chastity is well over 90% (this allows for typucal medical malfeasance like contaminated blood).
a vaccine that can produce billions in revs for pharma is 75%...maybe...therefore those noticing that chastity works better must have something wrong with them,.
where's wallace&darwin when u need them??

Whoa ther guys
I agree that social narration on a factual article is unnecessary.
however most of you are proving him correct.

@gabrielbear

your three "stats" were pull out of thin air and unfounded. The circumcision one is absolutely untrue. Please quit spreading misinformation as it is irresponsible and can be dangerous.

RE: Will vaccines make sex safer?
Vaccines won't make anything safer... just the pocket of the vaccines companies larger!!!

Most vaccines contain mercury salts which are highly toxic and other brain damaging cocktails...

The only way to ultimate health is to do a complete detox of the parasites and toxins with your body.

I'm now doing my third Liver flush and I've so far passed over 300 stones from my liver and gallbladder over the past 2 weeks... Painlessly and I feel GREAT!!!! Get these toxic stones out of your system safely using the methods highliighted by Andreas Moritz and get your selves back to ultimate health...

The HPV vaccine has caused deaths and brain damage... It is a mass sterilisation program combined with dumbing down measures....

Do the research yourselves using the internet and don't believe the mainstream media hype.

Why would a doctor get paid BONUSES for vaccinating children if the numbers are above 70% or 90% ???

I have found the article about doctors? immunisation programmes:
http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/pagerender.fcgi?artid=1508536&pageindex=1

I also suggest you google "Jane Burgermeister vaccines" and see what is happening with this manufactured swine flu we are supposed to be scared of!!!

Good news ...
... and more supporting evidence for Human evolution. Given a few survivors and a few generations of interbreeding between those survivors, Human populations develop antibodies to disease. It has worked that way since the beginning of time. Medical science makes it possible to isolate those antibodies and reproduce them for distribution to the rest of the population. Once the human body "sees" a sample of these anitbodies, it can replicate them to provide life-long protection to itself, and sometimes it's progeny against such disease.

The more serious problem that leads to the appearance of deadly disease is Human overpopulation. Wherever there is overpopulation (of any species) the natural world devises threats to that population until it's numbers are reduced to levels which are in balance with nature.

RE: Will vaccines make sex safer?
Good job, you made an article that managed to get a bunch of people
down one another's throats. I enjoyed the article and information, and
you probably could have said just about anything, even something
stupid like linux has no future and manage to get a bunch of people
ready to rip the other's head off. That said, I tend to be pretty much
on the left side of political thinking, but opening with statements that
polarize is usually a rough thing for getting any point across. When
people feel pigeon holed, they want nothing to do with anything else
the person putting them in that place has to say.

I feel if more blog writers left out comments that in some way shape or
form isolate a group of people and demonize them in any amount, we
would see much more intelligent conversations about the topics rather
than emotional responses about side issues.

RE: Will vaccines make sex safer?
As for, will sex be "safer" ... STDs spread more effectively than perhaps any other kind of disease (mainly because of the overall popularity of sexual activity) so we should expect more and more virulent STDs to arise.

Monogamy does reduce the spread of STDs for obvious reasons that have nothing to do with one's view of morality. Monogamy is also good for the species from an evolutionary standpoint since a child living in open grasslands with two adults look after it will have a better chance of survival than an child with only one adult looking after it.

Genetic diversity is also good for the species though so a certain level of promicuity might be "good for the species" as well.

RE: Will vaccines make sex safer?
I am a Christ Follower. I trust in him with my salvation as I know that every living thing knows (but may choose not to believe) that he made us in his image and for his cause in our obedience. He has blessed us with the ability of thought and a capacity for science and reason and therefore encourages us to exercise it. A cure for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases is a marvelous gift to ease the suffering of many.
I do not believe that HIV and others were designed as a punishment for sexual sin or homosexuality because EVERYONE on this earth would be afflicted. "Every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time." Genesis 6:5. When we even slightly think lustfully we commit a sexual sin, (which I do quite often and understand that sin is present in my life). It is not a matter of severity, just because I haven't been promiscuous doesn't mean I haven't committed sins worse inside my own mind.
The judgment that is commanded in the Bible is established for God and Christ inherent to administer to all. Judgment is also appropriate when one Christian is sharpening another Christ follower. A Christian may understand someone is sinning and may point it out but ONLY out of love. Our judgment is misplaced if it is not through love and through a relationship with another, we don't solve anything with blind condemnation. Homosexuality is a sin but are we to condemn those who are not on the path? We can love them and reach out to them to pray that they see that Christ loves them and wants to walk with them in righteousness and not in sin. HOWEVER WE CANNOT AFFORD TO PUSH THEM AWAY AND RUIN OUR OWN MINISTRY!!!!!! Christ spent most of his ministry with the broken and sinners of his age. How many of his closest friends were the tax collectors and hated men of the day? How is it that a man that killed Christians for so long came to see Christ and then save SO MANY!!!
We should not be focused on how science is facilitating sin, what are we doing on a personal level with our neighbor? Can we fight against sin on a grand scale before we have the courage to speak out in love to those around us? I pose all these rhetorical questions so we will think about how we are choosing to anger those that God made and loves dearly through malformed intentions. When will be stop posting replies and virtually voicing our stand against sin? How much time do we really have left to leave Christ's imprint on his lost children?

The only sex that is truely safe is confined to marriage
Only in those societies where the relief of lust and passion is funneled exclusively into marriage are women treated with respect. The emotional and physical abuse of women, and pedophilia, skyrockets elsewhere.

The actual act of sex between two consenting adults may not get either party hurt. But the myopic viewpoint of 'free sex' overlooks how men inevitably treat women as objects rather than sentient beings with hopes, dreams and aspirations. When sex is freely available, why should a man have to romance and treat a woman as something cherished when they could join a swinger's club or go to a wild party? What kind of a 'fool' would commit himself to a lifelong, monogomous and financially stressful relationship with one woman when relief from lust is so easily available?

RE: Will vaccines make sex safer?
Well, what was posted as an informational piece about medical progress has - like so many things today do, in our contentious country - provoked all sorts of inappropriate responses. The one that best hits that nail on its head is "Some of what has been written by others is simply astounding."

Uh huh.

To Mr. Blankenhorn, thank you for posting this piece at a popular (that is, non-medical, non-scientific) site. Information such as this deserves the widest currency.

Finally, I'm afraid that I just can't resist quoting poet Robert W. Service, who begins his collected works of poetry, "... Ye gods, forgive my 'literary' sins -- The other kind don't matter" (unless, of course, you believe the Earth to be six-thousand years old).

RE: Will vaccines make sex safer?
jdshore,

I am 70 years old. I was in the U. S. Navy for 30+ years and have worked as an expatriate for 15 more years. I have taken every vaccine and "brain damaging cocktail" available to me - including polio, MMR, DPT, rabies, plague, meningococcal, etc. ad infinitum. and I am in perfect health. I choose to believe that it is "because" of these immunizations that I have enjoyed a relatively illness free life for almost three quarters of a century.

RE: Will vaccines make sex safer?
@jdshore:

You've passed stones from your gallbladder? Really? Funny how that's anatomically IMPOSSIBLE. The gallbladder does not allow for any secretion other than bile to leave and for a stone to pass from your gallbladder would tear the lining of your stomach and/or liver and most likely kill you without immediate surgery.

------------------
And what's this nonsense about circumcision preventing 65% of HIV infections? WTF did that come from?

It's simply amazing to me how uninformed society is about sex, politics, health, religion, you name it. Not only uninformed, but ignorant since people continually pontificate on topics they know nothing about. Read a book, people!

Why is it even ethically questionable that medicine advances our quality of life? Why is it bad to fight diseases, sexually transmitted or not? Why is this an issue that merits discussion?

If you want to use a condom, use a condom, if not, don't. If you want to abstain so be it. If you want to dedicate your life to marriage and God, ok by me. Be gay, straight, bi, go swinging. Just don't push it on anyone else. JUST INFORM YOURSELF BEFORE YOU DO ANY OF IT. And the next time you want to give a lecture longer than the GD article itself.... try getting your facts straight. And learn some ******* grammar.

Are you a fan of Elizabeth Hasslebeck? Did you read it on the internet? Wow if you did it MUST be true! If passing stones through galbladders were that easy then why the hell did I pay so much to have mine removed? You sound like more of an advertisement for the newest diet craze.

It seems like many have missed..
a great philosophical point. No matter what you believe, your partner may be completely innocent no matter what side your on!!

I can't believe how many times this is ignored! Maybe one partner is promiscuous, and the other is oblivious to that!? Did anyone post to that question? I didn't read - sorry - I'm tired of arguments about religion/morals.

I just think one, or both, of the partners ought to have an oppornunity to protect themselves beyond the monogamous relationship. I don't know how many times I've seen one lying partner destroy both lives; and this is extremely tragic in my estimation!

I am a Christian, but that is PRECISELY why I leave judgement to Christ; I suggest you other supposed Christians do the same, as it might not be too heathy for your spirit to take God's place in judgement!

If you think that judgmental as well, please read our manual - It is called the BIble! It says,"Judge not, lest ye be judged!" If today's Christian would just adhere to this simple principal - how great God's word would be preserved!

On the one hand...
I resent being pigeonholed and having things about me and my ilk presumed, but that were never true. Sex has always been considered good by us, but promiscuity has not. Also we have never said that the sixties, per se, were evil, but that the Free Love philosophy in practice was absolutely antithetical to family solidity. The sixties happened to be one of the best times of my life, although from what I saw Free Love really only meant free promiscuity and many lives ruined., to which many ex-hippies attest.

On the other hand I agree that scientific progress in HIV and AIDS vaccines is good, especially as it allows ex-FreeLovers to perhaps repent of their old ways and to enjoy a monogamous relationship with less fear of hurting their spouse.

On the other hand I fear that, as all good things can be used for good or evil, this vaccine will be taken by some to be used to more greatly enable their promiscuity, which promiscuity we believe is inherently detrimental to our notion of what we believe is good, mainly the family as it has been defined since God married Adam and Eve.

On the one hand I agree that the vaccine may be beneficial to some, but on the other hand - and this point is always so difficult to put across - for a huge chunk of American couples it means nothing, because we are not at risk, period. We as couples are not at risk because our behavior prevents us from being at risk. We believe and honor the vows that we have taken. The "it-can-happen-to-anyone philosophy" doesn't bear out experientially speaking for this portion of society. From a statistical standpoint our devotion to our vows prevents from being at risk. True, cataclysoms happen, but not within a standard deviation.

On the one hand I agree that lasting Love is better than sex, which ultimately is the biggest argument in favor of the new vaccines of which I hope that all lovers of old ex-hippies will take advantage.

On the other hand...ah, there is no other hand. You, as I, are entitled to your opinion. You, as I, may preach and promote your beliefs, thanks to our Constitution - long live the Constitution. Likewise, you, as I, have the freedom of conscience to judge each other and to engage in persuading each other. Having read your thoughts (in your blogs) for some time I know that you are a smart dude, even cool, Man. You have the courage to publish you beliefs and accept comment on them, which allows me to oppose you on occasion. And though on occasion you may be my foe, on my side we believe in loving our enemies, so hey, I love ya, Man, power to ya.

Thanks for the opportunity to to think and speak.
