The Flibanserin wars

By | June 21, 2010, 11:19 AM PDT

It’s called the female Viagra.

Which is problem number one.

Viagra has been pretty thoroughly abused, aided-and-abetted by its maker, and the problem it addresses turns out also to be an indication of coming heart trouble. Besides, about 90% of the spam that hits my mailbox each day is Viagra spam.

But there’s another reason an FDA advisory panel voted 10-1 that Flibanserin (trade names would be Girosa and Ectris) should not go on the market as a cure for Hypo Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) (besides saying it’s no better than a placebo).

Some women don’t believe the problem is real. As Jenny Block writes today at Fox News, ” this issue is about what’s between a woman’s ears, not between her legs.

On that point drugmaker Boehringer Ingelheim agrees. Flibanserin was developed as an anti-depressant. As we noted here in November, it was serendipity that led to the new campaign for it.

The HSDD diagnosis, moreover, has been around since 1977. Some women have little interest in sex. Some aren’t bothered by this. Others are. Should those who are bothered be denied a possible solution out of what looks like prudishness?

Boehringer says it will keep pitching. It insists the condition is real, that side effects are minimal, and that women diagnosed with HSDD insist it helps.

That may be the real heart of the problem.

Since the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded in January that anti-depressants are no better on mild and moderate depression than sugar pills, skepticism over the drug category has been growing.

This was the first decision on anti-depressants to come before an FDA panel since then.

The Flibanserin wars will continue.

RE: The Flibanserin wars
As a neurologist who has treated mostly difficult patients with epilepsy and post head injury (children and adults), I can say the FDA has made it increasingly difficult for me to treat folks without increasing their fear of therapy. It is no wonder in society today that most people have some degree of depression, since everything is economically driven, not by a true sense of purpose. We are faced with an environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico currently near where I mostly grew up and spent many of my adult years (medical school in NOLA and faculty in Mobile) that was caused by this lack of purpose and has helped accelerate this feeling of helplessness at a grand scale. Antidepressants and placebos are equally effective in providing short term relief with the proviso that "this is going to make you better". It is no wonder that libido as well as overall mental and cognitive function is in decline. For our populace to feel better their must be an overall better common attitude, beginning with all our leaders. This could be helped by the media to stop broadcasting the "fear" message and add the work together to change to overall attitude. We have large numbers of groups dedicated to diversionary tangents such as anti-evolution and animal protection to name just a few) that could re-focus and help to change this problem using the same passion they currently have. Making a daily effort to demonstrate love and change the attitude toward pure economic motivation will help with the need for antidepressant placebos. We need antidepressants for people with brain disorders, to use without fear.

RE: The Flibanserin wars
the good doctor is correct in that the u.s. has a population that is ruled by panic and fear, usually fear of trivia and not about real concerns. it is true that the media, both ends, play on this daily. i do not know how to combat this except to get them to shut up and just report real news without editorializing. if a disaster as we have now in the gulf occurs, tell us all about it without all the scare tactics from one side and the placating of the population from the other. a real problem lends itself to real solutions, not overnight miracles. one southern state has proposed parayer as an answer. don't hold your breath.
it is obvious that no one in the administration of the u.s. or that of bp wants this to continue, so one has to assume rightfully that everyone involved is doing the best they can to stop it all

My only fear
is that the Gestapo, err, members of law enforcement, will show up at my door to silence me.

I regularly discuss my own theories on why things are as they are
at my personal blog, danablankenhorn.com.

Suffice it to say the media has not always been this way. And
politicians have not always been this way. And fear has not
always been the only motivator of American voters.

But it is something we've all become accustomed to. And I think
it's the fight against this attitude that is the President's chief
obstacle. Overcoming it would be a great legacy for any
President.

We need a new pharmaceutical, to be forcibly administered to those individuals who feel compelled to send out billions of spam messages, that reduces their antisocial urges.

RE: The Flibanserin wars
Most of this conversation is from people who have no clue about the real topic. I was on the testing panel for the flibanserin and it was wonderful !! The last 3-4 years, I have no desire for anyone ! I love my husband of 20 years and want to enjoy an intimate relationship with him. I tried Flibanserin when on trial and it DID MAKE A DIFFERENCE. It was suttle, and I enjoyed it completely. I didn't realize immediately the huge difference until after the fact in many ways. Once the trial was over, it was about 3-4 months before I just wasn't able to feel pleasure again. II've watched this closely and have cried with it not being available to women. I have tried a few other types but none other worked like this Flibanserin. I'll be paying big bucks for it someday and will be happy too !!
