The $100,000 challenge for diabetes

By | September 21, 2011, 1:52 PM PDT

The proper treatment of diabetes can often mean the difference between life and death. Statistics from the American Diabetes Association show that 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in adults 20 years and up. For patients that are insulin-resistant, new and innovative research is needed to treat these patients.

A partnership between the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International and InnoCentive is offering a challenge to help with this quest. According to the InnoCentive website, an award of $100,000 is being offered for the winning team.

According to a statement on the website:

This Challenge, sponsored by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) (the Seeker), is looking for novel ideas for the development of “glucose-responsive insulin”, an insulin that would work only when the body needs it, and deliver the precise amount of insulin activity in response to circulating glucose levels to control and maintain normal blood glucose levels throughout a daily routine with once-daily or less frequent dosing in people with insulin-dependent diabetes. JDRF envisions that the Winning Solution (or Solutions) from this Challenge will be further developed in a second phase that may involve the Winning Solvers and potentially partners from the commercial sector.

“What we need is sophisticated insulin that will take the guesswork out of managing diabetes by developing a novel insulin that works in the same way insulin works in people without diabetes,” said Aaron Kowalski PhD,  at the Juvenile Diabetes Research in a prepared statement. “By fostering novel approaches from diverse problem-solvers within and outside the diabetes field, we hope this challenge with InnoCentive will help speed progress toward the development of glucose-responsive insulin - progress urgently needed by people with diabetes.

Good Initiative to combat Diabetes
A partnership between the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International and InnoCentive offer for a challenge to help find solution for diabetes an award of $100,000 is being offered for the winning team is most welcome.

Diabetes mellitus, often simply referred to as diabetes, is a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood sugar, either because the body does not produce enough insulin, or because cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced. This high blood sugar produces the classical symptoms of polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsia (increased thirst) and polyphagia (increased hunger).
There are three main types of diabetes:
??? Type 1 diabetes: results from the body's failure to produce insulin, and presently requires the person to inject insulin. (Also referred to as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, IDDM for short, and juvenile diabetes.)
??? Type 2 diabetes: results from insulin resistance, a condition in which cells fail to use insulin properly, sometimes combined with an absolute insulin deficiency. (Formerly referred to as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, NIDDM for short, and adult-onset diabetes.)
??? Gestational diabetes: is when pregnant women, who have never had diabetes before, have a high blood glucose level during pregnancy. It may precede development of type 2 DM.
Other forms of diabetes mellitus include congenital diabetes, which is due to genetic defects of insulin secretion, cystic fibrosis-related diabetes, steroid diabetes induced by high doses of glucocorticoids, and several forms of monogenic diabetes.
China has a long history of dealing with this disease without modern drug therapy. This indicates that great effort has gone into alleviating the various symptoms of diabetes by natural methods. In the Yellow Emperor???s Inner Classic (written around 100 B.C.), the condition known as xiao ke is mentioned, and is translated today as diabetes or diabetic exhaustion (translation is emaciation-thirst).
Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are effective for treating Type 2 diabetes. In the 1994 the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine there was a report about ???Clinical and Experimental Studies in Treating Diabetes Mellitus by Acupuncture.??? It explains one of many such clinical trials that have been based on traditional methods of treatment that had been expounded in the past.

Treatment for diabetes
I'm almost afraid to say anything about this. But here goes.I know of people who are using cannabis oil to treat their diabetes. Some have stopped using the needle it works so good. Why is it that every time you see one of these studies and discussions that nobody mentions the use of this cannabis oil for a treatment,Is it that tabo.I had this numbing in my shoulders that was very annoying for a year.I made some of this cannabis oil for five days and the numming went away. Two other things went away with it and that was a hurting knee and a bad ear ach.None has returned for six months.Believe it or not,but there are people that are getting something positive out of this cannabis oil.I'm pretty sure that Mr Bill Clinton doesn't want people to use this stuff, even though it does do the trick and it's easy to make and use.You don't need doctors to use the stuff.I'd be safe in saying that there are close to 3 mil people using it for cures.Smoking it will not get you there.I'm sorry that people smoke it and it was not intended for that but it happened.Ingesting it in the thick oil form is where the cure is at.
