Pry my Dr Pepper from my cold dead hand

By | August 26, 2009, 9:05 AM PDT

Readers who decry “the nanny state” are not going to be happy with the latest American Heart Association release, stating we are a bunch of sugarholics and our habit is killing us.

The recommendations are stiff. Only 100-150 calories of sugar per day? A single soda contains 130.

The accompanying scientific report identifies the real villain, not sugar but high fructose corn syrup, which from a dietary standpoint is just like sugar and is used in other products like fruit drinks, yogurt and mixed drinks.

A Washington Post story on the announcement adds some other sources of sugar you may not be aware of, like spaghetti sauce, salad dressing, and all kinds of packaged foods. Labeling laws require sugar content  be listed in grams, but processors may list refined and natural sugars separately.

There is an irony here. American sugar costs more than sugar elsewhere, due to tariffs meant to protect domestic supplies. Thus there is a growing gray market for “real Coca-Cola” from Mexico, which uses cane sugar instead of corn syrup.

As people come to America, moreover, they adapt to the American diet, becoming sugarholics. A classic 1995 study showed second-generation Mexican immigrants had much worse diets than their mothers, mainly due to added sugar. Since then the problem has only grown worse.

Let me finish by bringing this story home. My wife loves Dr Pepper. She drinks it instead of coffee. She is proud of holding herself to 2 cans a day, and in the evening she prefers salty snacks.

But she’s still doing double her total recommended sugar intake, just from those two cans of soda.

Wish me luck getting her to cut back.

Good luck to you, too.

I'll bet none of the people making those recommendations live on a third world diet and minimum calories. We are all going to get older and die anyway. I will not go without my Coke or my coffee every day.

New Syndrome
It's called "Orthorexia nervosa" (www.orthorexia.com). The name sounds similar to Anorexia and they have a similar basis: control of what you eat. In Anorexia the control is to eat as little as possible. In Orthorexia the obsessive need to control is expressed by eating "correctly" - only the 'appropriate' foods and drinks are consumed. And, yes, like Anorexia, in extreme cases you can die from it.

Dana, did you know you can get real sugar Dr. Pepper from the bottling plant in Dublin Texas? The only US Dr. Pepper bottling plant to use real sugar.... And they sell the syrup which is even better on ice cream, etc.

Yummy! Check it out http://www.dublindrpepper.com/

Why not use a diet version? Unless of course you are one which feels the other sweeteners are worse.

I can't stand diet...
It makes me hungry. I don't know if this is a general thing, but whenever
I drink a diet soda I get ravenously hungry. Sort of defeats the purpose.

Thanks for the link to the "real" Dr Pepper. Dublin is a distance
southwest of Ft. Worth. The syrup sounds like a great Christmas gift.
Ever try basting a ham in Dr Pepper? Delicious.

As to the comment about the people making these recommendations
not being terribly connected to reality, I thought my attitude toward it
was implied by the nature of the headline, an allusion to a famous
Charlton Heston quote before the NRA Convention.

Dana, you're not the only one to feel this "side effect" of artificial sweeteners in diet drinks. Check out this link.

No surprise
Of course I' have found my body to be full of surprises. Coffee puts me to
sleep because of the diuretic effect.

RE: Pry my Dr Pepper from my cold dead hand
A movie well worth watching is "sweet misery" it highlights the issues of Aspartame poisoning...

I've heard it is 3 times more additive than sugar and an excitotoxin...

The only think I drink now is distilled re-mineralised re-energised vortexed water or non-concentrate fruit juices.

I try and avoid MSG and remove Sodium Fluoride (toothpaste) from my diet... Sodium Fluoride is the main ingredient to RAT POISON!!!

I use cheddar cheese, red Onion and raw garlic to re-enamel my teeth superb info I got from a very aware online radio show... "1radionetwork"
