New app to treat symptoms of PTSD

By | July 27, 2011, 3:48 AM PDT

For soldiers returning from combat, the decision to seek mental help may be difficult. But now thanks to a partnership between the VA’s National Center for PTSD and the DoD’s National Center for Telehealth and Technology, there may be hope.

A mobile application called the “PTSD Coach” may help veterans deal with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of post-traumatic stress include intrusive memories, avoidance, anxiety, and emotional arousal.

A prepared statement by the VA said:

“This new tool is about helping Veterans and Service members when and where they need it,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.  “We are encouraged so many have already downloaded this resource and hope many more will utilize this convenient tool to access VA services.”

Kristin Volk from ABC15.com reports:

Dr. Sonja Batten, of the Department of Veterans Affairs, says the app was specifically developed with veterans in mind.

“We were able to build this app that provides accurate information that helps the veterans assess their symptom level: see whether things are going up or down over time,” she explained.

Along with professional treatment, the PTSD Coach can help track symptoms of PTSD, and direct veterans towards psychological care if needed.

According to the PTSD Coach website, an app for family members of PTSD will be available to the public in the future.

symptoms of PTSD?
Dear Madam, I am a subscriber of smartplanet and take deep interest in its multifarious, informative articles and blogs. You will agree that, it is the ignorant who aspire to know. Since I do not skip over an informative text, it will help me to know at the start, what the matter is about. Hence, I suggest that any topical shortforms such as PTSD, be avoided in the title or the full form of the term be given atleast once, at the start of the article, for reader motivation. You do have done so at one place but in a 'By the way, way' and had to be searched, out of curiosity, since I seldom leave behind a thing 'Ununderstood'. Regards.
