Why are people dying in the nation’s capital?

The Washington, D.C. Department of Health recently released its first report that shows the top preventable causes of death in the District of Columbia. The report, the first of its kind in a U.S. city, will help D.C. make better decisions about health programs, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty said. Out of all preventable deaths in the city in 2007, the report reveals that 49.5 percent were preventable.

The study shows residents how much they could improve their health (and prolong life) if they made just a couple lifestyle changes . For example, the top cause of death for District residents is heart disease, followed by cancer; the top preventable cause of death in the city is tobacco use—which is closely linked to both heart disease and cancer.

Below is the breakdown of preventable deaths–which makes it clear that a shocking number of people are still smoking and not exercising. It amazes me that anyone would still pick up a cigarette, knowing what we know about how lethal they are. As for exercise, I’ll refer you to Jane Brody’s column in The New York Times last week, Even More Reasons to Get a Move On, where she wisely asks, “What, I’d like to know, will persuade the majority of Americans who remain sedentary to get off their duffs and give their bodies the workout they deserve?”

Top Preventable Causes of Death in the District of Columbia in 2007 and Percent of Overall Deaths:

1. Tobacco 16.6%
2. Poor diet and physical inactivity 15.1%
3. Microbial (infectious) agents 4.6%
4. Alcohol consumption 2.9%
5. Firearms – 2.7%
6. Medical errors 2.7%
7. Toxic agents 2.1%
8. Sexual behavior 0.8%
9. Illicit drugs 0.8%
10. Motor vehicles 0.6%
11. Uninsurance 0.6%

2.7% .. same for firearms? and Medical errors?

go to doctor? or get shot accidently ? mmmmm....
Since "preventable" implies choice...

The Question
"What, I?d like to know, will persuade the majority of Americans who remain sedentary to get off their duffs and give their bodies the workout they deserve??

The answer is a simple, 3-step process.
1. Universal taxation. 10% on income tax, plus 1% of net worth.
2. Implement a lethal selection process.
3. Winners of selection process are granted a 5 year exemption from all taxation.

Age 10: 1st cut. Evaluation of all children for mental ability. Bottom 50% are sterilized and tatooed on foreheads as defective.

Age 20 and onward. Any person can acheive tax exempt status every 5 years by winning a mortal combat session with another seeking that status. Combats to be scheduled and refereed by the government; and televised for entertainment and revenue purposes.

As an accompanying note on cigarettes, I'd like to add that the industry is now piloting organic cigarettes. In order to get certified, I suppose they will have to manufacture the arsenic and other poisons without the use of pesticides and other harmful agents.

People are dying in every nation's capital, in every city, town, etc., because people live in these places. The headline is simply nonsense.

With regard to the list, I echo Paul above, how, exactly, were these "causes" quantified? Of the list, the only direct causes are: Microbial (infectious) agents, Firearms, Medical errors, Toxic agents, Illicit drugs, Motor vehicles, and possibly alcohol. Given the way the list is worded, several of these are rather ambiguous. For example, would an OD of over-the-counter or prescribed drugs fall in the "Toxic agents" or "Illicit drugs" buckets, or both? Likewise, would death by a post-surgical infection be classified under "Microbial (infectious) agents" or "Medical errors"?

It might seem like nit-picking, but if you're going to use statistics to press a point, it matters how they're framed. With this in mind, how can one point to direct causal deaths by: Tobacco, "poor diet and inactivity", "Sexual behavior", and, especially, "uninsurance" (which is rather an odd word)? Sure excessive alcohol can directly kill, but that happens rarely, it is usually an exacerbating factor, as in a DUI car wreck. Likewise, "sexual behavior" rarely results in direct death; one may die from an STD, but whether one dies or not isn't necessarily directly related to the behavior.

The fact that the first 31.7% of these causes are not actually "causative" throws into question the whole list.

On another note, to the "wisely asked" question of ?What, I?d like to know, will persuade the majority of Americans who remain sedentary to get off their duffs..." I answer that it will certainly not be shrill harridans screeching at us. Here is the key part of that question that needs attention: majority of Americans . Generally speaking we, the majority of Americans, don't appreciate being told what we must do. It's in the nature of Americans to bristle at that sort of talk. I am an American who has chosen my direction in life, it is none of your business whether or how much I eat, exercise, smoke, or whatever.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." So where does your dislike of my waistline come into play here?

Having said all that, I don't doubt that there are significant concerns, particularly in the DC area, for the well-being of residents. And knowing what factors are involved can help change things for the better. However, framing it in ambiguous terms, like much of that list, or using nanny-state pressure tactics, like the exercise comment, only serve to polarize people. Discussion is difficult when one is being talked down to.

The D.C. residents are simply following the healthy President's lead, and using tobacco.......and clogging up their arteries.

After all, the President's physicians say he is "Fit."

At least, AT LEAST, 1 in 10 is because citizens in the nations capitol are not allowed handgun ownership for personal defense, criminals no this, and are enboldened by the knowledge their intended victims are helpless sheep for the slaughter, and the cops won't be there until AFTER the crime is a done deal. HELLO !! Check the stats on EVERY nation that has enacted a national anti-gun law....crime up, or crime down?? DUH for real!!
