Studying snake venom for medical cures

By | March 9, 2010, 4:00 AM PST

Snake venom — which can be lethal to humans when bitten – is frequently studied by scientists for the potential medicinal powers within it. Venom contains anti-clotting proteins. It was a factor in the development of a blood pressure medication. And it might even help slow cancer growth.

A novel protein within King Cobra venom is science’s latest venom-related discovery — and it could lead to better treatment options for certain neurological conditions.

Discovered in the Singapore laboratory of Dr. R. Manjunatha Kini, “haditoxin” is expected to have unique pharmacological properties, according to the “paper of the week” in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. “We know that the family of three-finger toxins display diverse biological actions on the human nervous system, cardiovascular system and blood clotting,” said Dr S. Niru Nirthanan, a co-author of the paper. “Some have directly led to the development of compounds with potent analgesic and blood pressure reducing properties — so it is likely that haditoxin in its ‘conjoined twin’ state or as individual components will offer us more novel insights.”

Haditoxin could serve as a lead compound or template from which to design other drugs, the researchers said. Or it could serve as a “molecular probe” helping scientists study neurotransmitter receptors and their role in conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, schizophrenia, anxiety and nicotine addiction.

The venom of the King Cobra, a carnivorous snake that can grow up to 18 feet in length, has provided a wealth of opportunities for scientists. ”Researchers have been studying King Cobra venom for over 50 years and yet we are still identifying new compounds,” Nirthanan said. ”It is a complex cocktail of biological molecules that can change composition depending on the environment, the season or even the snake’s diet.”

The paper’s lead author, Amrita Roy, is a doctoral student in the biological sciences department at the National University of Singapore, where Kini is a professor. Nirthanan is a lecturer and researcher at Griffith University in Australia.

There's already a CURE for Cancer -- Pure Hemp Oil
This is wonderful news, but can you guys talk about something that actually works RIGHT NOW?? Why is ZDNet and SmartPlanet not talking about that Canadian patriot, Rick Simpson, who has been curing friends (including himself) of CANCER?? It's all over the Net and Hemp TV has written about it.
What is his cure? Pure Hemp Oil (not hemp seed oil).
It really annoys the heck out me that everyone's looking at EXPENSIVE alternatives to cancers and other chronic diseases when the cannabinoids (found in the buds) have been proven to eradicate cancer and many other ailments.
Please be a responsible media outlet and let your readers see this post. Quit trying to look for complicated or sophisticated "cures." It simply boggles the mind how many billions of dollars have been wasted on cancer research et al.

Here's the proof:

Snake venom ? which can be lethal to humans when bitten
Never heard of anyone biting snake venom...
Probably should have read:
Snake venom ? which can be lethal to humans, if bitten.

I think there is more promise in snail venom research, at present.

As one who has benefitted from this research
I was bitten by a viper several years ago and was saved by a recently developed antivenon, created with knowledge gained by this research. How may people take blood pressure medicine? When bitten / if bitten, you will be glad to benefit from the research.

RE: Studying snake venom for medical cures
Just a thought... If posting an article about snake venom use a picture
of a venomous snake and not a juvenile corn snake (not only not venomous but probably the least offensive snake known).

RE: Studying snake venom for medical cures
Caution with snake venom cures!!!!
I have tried them already as a homeopathic remedy which are supposed to be safe. Got very sick from them. Also had read that successful treatments were performed in the area of veterinary medicine for treatments of eosinohilic disorders in cats. Lechesis, Vipera and other snake venom derived remedies were used. However, from what I have seen these treatments had actually caused the cats to take on the symptoms of the actual snake bite itself, resulting in the cat having to have been euthanized. Perhaps if the FDA takes a very active role in controlling this type of medicine, there may be a safe and effective drug for the public.
But after seeing what a supposedly safe homepathic remedy can do. I would not trust this type of medication. I am very surprised that homeopathy is not regulated by our FDA, especially since the snake venom based treatments are sold over-the-counter in just about any health? food store.
Thank you
