Career coaches are for sissies!

By | December 31, 2009, 3:00 AM PST

“If you need a career coach you don’t have a career”. That’s the advice from Stephen Viscusi gives readers in his new book, Bulletproof Your Job: 4 Simple Strategies to Ride Out the Rough Times and Come Out On Top at Work. Viscusi, a headhunter turned author, speaker, television journalist has been referred to as America’s workplace guru. His new book has been referred to by Publisher’s weekly as “Mommy meets Machiavelli”. We recently profiled Stephen and have asked him back to talk about talk about career coaching.

Stephen Viscusi, thanks for visiting with us again, career coaches are for sissies? Really?

Life coach… Career Coach. Are you for real? Please, what does that mean? “I am unemployed looser, now I am going to teach you all the mistakes I made?” Picture this—you are about to undergo open heart surgery, or any operation, and your doctor is about to start then needs to call his or her coach for the confidence to operate?”

Is that what you want?…or who do you want working for you? The word coach itself is a misnomer because the best coaches in sports don’t really coach players, they kick ass! That is how I make people successful in my TV show and in my books. I TELL YOU WHAT TO DO. MY way or the unemployment line. Don’t like it…quit my team. I will show you the door!

I think coaches for people are frigging rip off’s and I use the word “sissies” in a non-gender way (cause I grew up gay and everyone always called me a sissy…) so I really use it here to draw attention. What is meant by Career Coaches and Life Coaches? They are for idiots who can’t make their own decisions—go to a SHRINK—not a Coach… or watch my show and I will kick your ass into a job. Not give you false positive reinforcement! Please I live mostly in LA now to tape my two TV shows. How many over 40 actors have I met? Like a million! When do you throw in the towel?

Look I have a son—if he is good at something I tell him, if he sucks, I tell him too—get it?

Where should we be turning for advice?

PRAYER—it really works!
First to yourself and your family. They know you best—your partner, husband or wife. I give the most unconventional advice and everyone is appalled…but I believe in it and I get millions—yes millions of letters from people telling me they agree. No matter what religion you preach or even if you practice no religion at all PRAYER! I see your readers rolling there eye’s—let’s see what they think? Which if you out there have been praying for a new job, a better one, or to save the one you have? Be honest now. Visit my website www.bulletproofyourresume.com

Thanks Stephen!

Why do you continue to feature this guy? Aside from the horrid grammar, "...see your readers rolling there eye?s," the article is no more than a blatant self-promotion for what is, in essence, a CAREER COACH!

To: "WinstonV" who commented above.---

Are you familiar with the concept of a "interview"? Are you aware I am NOT WRITING the article that you are are whining about the grammar in. A writer calls, interviews me, they "write" a article, then I assume a Editor, "edits" what they write before it goes on line. I know you teach English- you wrote me once before. Good for you a angry professor, what else is new. Those that can't do--I am told TEACH. (Where do I buy your books?)

Self promotion: Here is a ear full for you. This is my second book, HarperCollins has published in 9 languages--. I hardly need to promote a thing.

I make my living as a author, columnist (www.huffingtonpost.com) and on TV.

I don't need to self promote anything, I almost have a monopoly on the work place genre, and I don't "coach" anyone.

I am open to anyone disagreeing with me, even correcting my English is fair, but I did not write the article you read.

Get a life !

For the record...I conducted this interview via email and while I tried to clean it up a bit I did not attempt to re-write the colorful and casual language. I think it reads like a conversation and helps readers understand the Stephen's sense of humor.

RE: Career coaches are for sissies!
As someone who has never sought the help of a career coach, I can't personally attest to their effectiveness. But the last person I spoke to who had a fairly inexpensive consultation with one was able to leave a position where she was unhappy for a more fulfilling and higher paying job within a month.

I think Stephen Viscusi is missing the point of what a career coach is all about. Unemployed "loosers" are not the only ones who use this service. People considering changing industries or looking to reach the next level at their current job can also benefit from a consultation with an third-party who helps people do this for a living.

There seems to be some bad history between Viscusi and WinstonV, but his defensive, self-important and immature response in the above comment just cemented by impression of him as a bully in "expert" clothing. And DUH, conducting an interview for a book you wrote is SELF PROMOTION; to call it anything else is disingenuous at best and idiotic at worst.
