Bill Gates: mobile health technology will save lives, help overpopulation

By | November 10, 2010, 4:00 AM PST

WASHINGTON -– Bill Gates, co-chair and trustee of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, gave a keynote address yesterday at the mHealth Summit, an annual gathering that focuses on improving health care through mobile technology.

Gates told an audience of more than 2,000 that if we could register every worldwide birth on a cell phone, we could ensure that children receive the proper vaccines. He also said the key to controlling population growth is to save the lives of children under 5; and the next big thing in technology is robots.

Gates said computing technology has been great for health care, and there are plenty of opportunities to use the cell phone in clinic settings. Although he noted that some places which need mhealth technology the most may not be able to fully benefit from it.

“We have to approach these things with some humility,” he said. “There’s not Internet connections back there. Often [patients are too sick] for some cell phone thing to do something for them.”

Gates said the key health care metric that we as a society should be trying to improve is one that is in the front of his mind all the time–the number of children who die before age 5. Today, he said the number is 8.5 million; in 1960 it was 20 million.

“About one-third [of that improvement] is by increasing income,” he said. “The majority has been through vaccines. Vaccines will be the key. If you could register every birth on a cell phone—get fingerprints, get a location—then you could [set up] systems to make sure the immunizations happen.”

Gates said he’d like to see a birth registration system, and because it’s a new technology, “we should let 1,000 new ideas blossom.”

He said vaccination rates in poorer areas, such as northern Nigeria and northern India, are below 50 percent, and mobile technology could make a significant difference.

“When I think about the biggest impacts, I think aobut patient reminders,” Gates said. He explained that technology could help remind people to take the TB drugs regularly or remind mothers to do certain things in their child’s first year of life.

He also said technology will be important in monitoring the supply chain (i.e. making sure there aren’t counterfeits among vaccinations and medications) as well as saving lives on the ground. “Malaria and TB are going to be the first things where you say, ‘Wow, without this mobile application, all these people would have died.’”

Gates told the audience that there is no such thing as a healthy, high-population growth country. “If you’re healthy, you’re low-population growth,” he said.

While most of us assume that saving the lives of children will contribute to overpopulation, Gates said the contrary is true.

“The key thing, the most important fact that people should know and make sure other people know: As you save children under 5, that is the thing that reduces population growth. That sounds paradoxal. The fact is that within a decade of improving health outcomes, parents decide to have less children.

“As the world grows from 6 billion to 9 billion, all of that population growth is in urban slums,” he said. “Slums is a growing businesses. It’s a very interesting problem.”

He said no matter what we care about—the environment, schools, nutrition, conflict—the issues are insoluble at 3 percent population growth per year. “Nobody can handle that type of situation, so the best thing you can do is avoid those deaths.”

He said we are in a tough time for foreign aid, and governments are cutting their budgets in response to the financial climate. “The U.K. is quite exemplary,” he said. “They set aside their aid budget and are on track to keep their commitment. It will grow while they cut the rest of their budget. I hope it doesn’t get cut here in the U.S., but I’ll say I’m quite concerned that it will be.”

Gates said he has resorted to pleading for money. “I’m a beggar now,” he said. “I go around and beg governments for the final [millions of dollars] needed to eradicate polio. The financial component may be why it doesn’t get done.”

When asked what’s next in our technological advancement, Gates said there’s no doubt it’s robots. “If you don’t want to go to a convention,” he said, “just send a robot. “When we look at something like infant mortality, there’s a certain level you can’t get below if you can’t do C-sections.” He said doing a caesarean section delivery requires a sterile environment, but Gates said it’s fairly routine, so it could be done by a robot.

He said that we are moving from computers sitting idle while we type; to those that can see us and have high-end applications; to computers that allow us to move and connect with other users in applications like Xbox.

“Computers are learning to see, learning to talk ,learning to listen, learning to move around,” Gates said. “The dexterity things are maybe five years behind.” But he said once a robot learns a task, “it doesn’t forget how to do it. It can do it 24 hours a day.”

Gates used an example in South Africa to illustrate how health education doesn’t always lead to behavior change. He said the Gates Foundation partnered with the Kaiser Family Foundation to educate young people about HIV, with several types of outreach, including billboards. When interviewed, there was no question that the young people understood what caused HIV, but there were not significant behavior changes, because in their minds, the disease was in the distant future.

“If AIDS killed you immediately, things would be better because you’d see these piles of bodies outside bars [and think], ‘I don’t want to go in there… looks suspicious.’ It’s these discontinuities that are the problem,” Gates said. “If all the poor people lived in your neighborhood we wouldn’t have problems with foreign aid.”

RE: Bill Gates: mobile health technology will save lives, help overpopulati
Open Letter to Bill Gates

Hello Mr. Gates:
You said "I am a beggar now". I am thrilled because that's
exactly what I am and YOU HELPED MAKING ME ONE.
And so NOW, for the first time in our lives we two have
something in common.
For a long time I could not figure out what kind of pleasure a
big SHARK like yourself can take from squashing a tiny,
defensless fish like me; surely you found no challenge, no
satisfaction in it!
Now I know: you wanted us to have some common ground,
so with no reservations and no difficulty we would be able to
communicate, to understand each other, to get our messages
across. Isn't it what you want?
You remember my three letters to you written in 2008, when
my business, a Miami Four Seasons condo-hotel you have co-
owned since 2007 was on fire? You don't? Oh, I know, your
empire was too vast then, managed by too many, you never got
the "cry for help" type of messages I sent (?).
But now both of us are beggars which, I guess, means that
your empire shrank a little and that eliminated any former
communication problem so I can tell you all you need to know,
you will listen and answer, isn't it so?
Listen, but now what I have to say cannot be squeezed in
one letter let alone a short e-mail. The documentation of the
Miami Four Seasons investors ripoff has by now thousands of
pages of court documents. Those are the documents of the
three lawsuits filed by three groups of ripped off investors
against The Miami Four Seasons owners and developers: two in
the local Miami court, one (Racketeering!) in the Federal Court.
In case you still don't know it:
You are one of the defendants.
I am one of the plaintiffs.
And we are both beggars, EXUALS ?
Please, confirm it in a private e-mail to me.
It would make the rock bottom where you helped putting me a
little more bearable.
With kind regards.
Sincerely yours,
Bozena Sawa
ps. On the second thought: How serious are you about
this "beggar eqality" between you and I ? Don't you mean it the
way Orwell defined it some time ago: "All people are equal but
some of them are more equal than others".

Disingenuous
Bozena Sawa, you're rather bold accusing Bill for your own failures. Typical of the entitlement mentality. Especially considering your record on the condo issues in Miami. You blame everyone but the real culprit; yourself. Anyone wanting to know about your condo fraud issue can find plenty with a Google search for 'Bozena Sawa' such as this link: http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2011/05/four_seasons_accused_of_massiv.php

Um Mr Sawa, I don't think your post really relates to the editorial
point being made here or whether Smart Planet will forward your
missive to your intended recipient.

On another note, I don't think Mr Gates reference to begging has
anything to do with you personally, but you've made a very
poetical connection. Have you considered taking the 'Sidartha'
route through life and putting your disadvantage to good use - it
might help with the colic you're experiencing.

Mr. Spider:
You will be a great acquisition for the cause of saving the
planet but not before being born again and becoming a people's
person, so to speak with a heart and conscience, knowing and
feeling what is wrong and what is right.
Right now you don't.
My post does relate to the point being made as much as it
would refer to such issues as, for example: organ transplants,
any new real estate development, recless driving, claim to a
scientific discovery if they all refer to doing something with
other people's forcicibly or fraudulently taken lives, cars,
research results and money.
Pointing out to the source of money used in any
undertaking certainly helps to shed more light on the character
or issue in focus.
Any piece of writing worth anything should try to answer
as many "wh" questions as possible.
And it is a pity you are being sarcastic knowing which is
obvious nothing about the pain I wrote about shared by a few
dozens of other poeple, equaly damaged. Educate yourself first
(I told your where to find all the info) --argue later.

RE: Bill Gates: mobile health technology will save lives, help overpopulation
Mr. Bill Gates wanted Windows in every PC, he got it.
He wanted Windows in every living room, he got it.
He wanted Windows in every bedroom, he got.
Not enough, he put Windows in cell phones, cars, toys, media players, in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in buses, in ships...
Not enough.. So what's next?
Maybe he's planning to install Windows in every kidney, every liver, heart, lung... Oh! Maybe every Human Cell, every DNA. And everything networked a la Microsoft.
We get sick no problem, just launch Health Explorer (the future version of Internet Explorer) and the cure is one click away. Sorry before we can use HE, we have to authenticate with MicroLife.sick.
Of course, we have to pay to enjoy this this extraordinary Health Care System, even Obama wouldn't dream about.
Wait, there is a catch: You don't pay, they send the REPO MEN (the movie), and right away they terminate your membership. In fact, before they send the hit men, they give you a grace period, where remotely through a Remote Death Protocol (RDP) connection; they put you in hibernation mode.
Oh one says, I am disconnected, I am dead. Not really, they give your body a new identity, through a new membership- body mapping. This very advanced technology is called: ARTIFICIAL reINCARNATION (AI). I think it?s co-developed with Stephen Spielberg?s NightmareWorks.
I think I divulged too much. So I stop here.
I am very excited by all this. Just one thing worries me. If one day life ceases on planet earth, it?s because of the Blue Face Of Death that comes with Windows.
Till then, lets us find more natural ways to cure diseases and more rational ways to avoid premature deaths.
With all my respect Mr. Gates, I suggest you repent to Mother Nature and stop treating her as an artefact of man?s mind. We go back to her, that?s where we came from. We?ll be much happier beings, if we take this suggestion more seriously.
Greetings.
A fellow human.

It is true. When men/women see their children safe they will avoid more children.
But this is not sufficient. Education and health should be free so no one needs a child to grow up and support in old age.
To be specific we should use SMS so it needs liitle technology knowledge to use. Every village nurse (or equivalent) can register birth and death.

When do people realize the Monetary System is obsolete? Robots replacing humans in all facets of medicine, production, ie. Diminishing exchange of labor for money. Check the Zeitgeist movement fro a new direction for humanity.

count on Gates to back every privacy violation scam
You can count on Billy Gates and Larry Ellison to back every massive
privacy violation scam under the sun. What we should be doing is pushing
for the elimination of birth certification and socialist insecurity numbers.

But the planet is over-populated and over-crowded.

Bill.....I have this feeling you are Not working for the good side.
May I suggest a slogan for your talk?
"No Child Left Un-poisoned"

Your vaccines are toxic, they destroy the immune systems of the wee ones.
You are Evil, Bill..........and something needs to be done about that.

Say no to vaccines of any kind! They are all very toxic poisons that destroy the immune system, create auto immune diseases, and open up the doors for petrochemical giants (companies) to profit for many years in the future. Vaccines do not eliminate diseases they allow them to increase.

Do the opposite of what these monsters are proposing and you will have the answer to good health!

We all know the real adgenda is not saving the children---it is population reduction through toxic, poison vaccines. What a cruel person you are. If you really cared you would not be funding death promoting adgendas instead of wellness and helping causes. If you think there are too many people then you and your family should bow out and make space for kinder human beings. Money does not make you more special than anyone else--just able to control more situations, and people. either for good or evil. You oughtt to be ashamed of yourself.

Thank goodness most people are waking up and recognize the wolves in sheep's clothing like Gates, who going about the world seeking whom they may destroy. We know that eugenicists like Gates are doing everything they can to destroy the population, and cull it, through abortion, contraception, and vaccines. They are NOT philanthropists - we see right through you.

Gates' messianic control complex keeps getting scarier and scarier. Vaccines are toxic to the human body and in particular SUPPRESS immune function, proven by studies that the vaccine 'benefit' is non existent. Should'nt mr.gates the 'doo gooder' the 'saviour of humankind' spend his vast wealth on actually providing people with real clean uncontaminated food and water ?
Should'nt he be providing the resources for people to grow their own NON GMO food ? Oh and Mr.Gates is pro Geo Engineering to manipulate the Earth's weather. If this is not a mentally the human race should fear and oppose i don't know what is. What i do know is that collectively the human race will dig itself out of it's problems without Mr.Gates and his eugenisist 'elite' buddies.

Bring it on Bill! Bring it on Barack!
I am sick of telling stupid people to quit eating and shooting and popping junk to stay "healthy". If you have not noticed it is not working. I can see what works and know how to keep my kids healthy with out the use of hormones, puss, and antibiotics.. Never mind the chemical toxins we have to dodge every day. Does not surprise me Mr Idiot Gates takes pleasure in all these people sitting with their laptops and cell phones right on their genital areas... then "wheres the baby".. "how come I can't have a baby"..... maybe you have fried nut syndrome from all the waves????? Or the shots? Or the food? HMMMMMM?

Why is there an explosion of disease?

Where are the bees?

Where is the ice?

Were are the fish?

What is in the fish we do have?

Where is the money?

All questions you need to seriously answer before you say
these people are anything but EVIL!

STICK IT TO THE MAN EVERY CHANCE YOU GET!

RE: Bill Gates: mobile health technology will save lives, help overpopulation
I have to echo other posters' concerns about true-believer Bill
Gates's passion for/fascination with vaccines. He has a point
about people having fewer children when the ones they have
survive; but (1) vaccines have very detrimental side effects (some
more than others); and (2) all disease mortality rates go down
when the environment is cleaned up - cleaner water, better
hygiene, etc. Plus how vaccines have been used in the past to
inject young girls in third-world countries with an anti-fertility
agent; and what else could be put in them, by PTB eager for
people control?? Bill wants every child tagged at birth with
vaccines with the help of mobile phones? Thank you, no thanks.
And especially when there are a plethora of natural substances
to treat the viruses and bacteria with/enhance the immune
system, that don't have the damnable side effects to them that
the vaccines have. But that's no help to the medical-
pharmaceutical complex, those upstanding folks who don't make
money on healthy people. What a system, wherein the sicker
people are, the healthier the economy. Indeed, it's time for
robots to take over more of the routine work; and then we can
jettison this system, that is not fit for purpose in the (very near)
future.

RE: Bill Gates: mobile health technology will save lives, help overpopulation
Bill is out of his mind, he does give a lot of money to charity, but it's interesting to investigate exactly where the money goes. It goes to vaccination projects that don't work but make drug companies rich, it goes to agriculture subsidies, but only for GM crops, remember that The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation bought some 500.000 shares in Monsanto last year.

Hmm, isn't that interesting?

When Bill is gone, the World will be well rid of another genocidal maniac.

The world is over populated? Bollocks. There aren?t enough people on this planet. What we have too much of is greed; forced famine; extortion; war; etc.

You want to solve over population? Take the power away from the private banks to issue money as debt. ALL current problems solved: over-population; economic crisis; starvation; etc.

Sorry Bill, but your elitism has made you blind to the truth. Vaccines are toxic. They give kids seizures. They make kids sick. They kill children. They cause autism. Have you ever looked at VAERS? How many deaths were cause by the vaccines this year? How many children develop illness from those very same vaccines? Sorry but my children's immune systems are not at your disposal because you believe in reducing population growth.

Bill Gates - vaccines and over population
Don't understand the fight against vaccines!! I grew up where we all got measles, chickenpox, mumps and the most dreaded polio. I was one of the first to have my children vaccinated against these awful diseases, especially the polio vaccine. This is not a perfect world - instead of focusing on the negative, why not try the positive for a change? If Bill Gates ideas are not those you want to espouse then go somewhere else and do something good.

vaccinations
To Dietary Supplement, I too was born in the days of measles, etc. Good for you to choose to have your kids vaccinated; I choose against vaccines. I have four children, all grown, My daughter however will never be able to go out into the world and be on her own, she suffered a severe reaction to her vaccine shots. I investigated, perhaps you too should see what goes into the shots so you can be informed as to what is being injected into your children, how about [ aborted baby tissue ] Besides being forced to vaccinate, the likes of Bill Gates and this Administration, I am very frightened for my daughter and those like her and the elderly, the big next thing is [Euthanasia]. We had to sit by and watch a young lady thirst to death because her husband wanted her dead. So many in the world thought she would be better off dead. My daughter is much like Terri Schiavo, [Misguided Compassion] is very, very, very dangerous!! We need to get informed before we allow the Government to dictate what we are going to be forced to do or have done to us. Back to vaccines, Polio was fazing out before the vaccine came along, cleanliness came in. Having those childhood illnesses was better for us than bad for us, it built immunity. Vaccines take the role of natural immunity away, the results many other autoimmune diseases. It should be obvious that vaccines can cause harm, they are like medications with all there side affects. They like to tell us our food and the air we breath is the culprit, but the truth is the vaccines are full of scary stuff.

Just who are these people that think they know whats best for the rest of us? They trash our world and then blame it all on us, as if we are the problem? Enough already!
Bill Gates creates the New Final Solution, what a waste on all those billions. Satan has the last laugh on this one.
