A headwind of renewable power is approaching. The U.S. Interior Department has completed an environmental review for a massive wind farm that has the potential to power up to 1 million homes and cleared the way for more offshore development.
Yesterday, the government announced that environmental reviews had been completed for Wyoming's Chokecherry and Sierra Madre Wind Farm, which could become the U.S's largest project with up to 1,000 turbines.
"When it comes to wind energy, we're making significant progress both onshore and offshore to diversify our nation's domestic energy portfolio and stand up a clean energy economy," Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said.
The farms would produce 3,000-megawatts and be managed by Power Company of Wyoming, and will be built at an estimated cost of US$4B-$6B. Half of the turbines will be located on public lands. The utility has forecast a regional economic benefit.
Assessments were also completed for the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) offshore Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The ability to develop on the OCS, combined with cheaper turbines, could lead to a boom for the wind industry.
"Today, as we take the next steps toward realizing what could be the largest wind energy project in the world and holding a competitive offshore wind lease sale, we are really at the forefront of a renewable energy revolution," Salazar added.

Half a million dollars to fix a new $4.7 million turbine installed with federal stimulus money. http://charlestownbridge.com/2012/03/01/sinking-wind-turbine-is-troubling/ In best case scenario it will produce $300,000 a year in electricity. The taxpayers are looking at an ROI of 17 years if the thing never needs repair again.
Wind is intermittent. The grid demands steady power. This is why wind (and solar, which is also intermittent, erratic and unreliable) demand an equal installed capacity of fast-reacting gas turbine generators (when not paired with hydro, a pairing which has its own serious problems). Wind and solar are not threats to fossil fuel, but are frequently the stalking horse of one of them--methane. Smartplanet is often Dumbplanet, IMHO. When wind has a maximum 30% capacity utilization, and therefore methane is being burned 70% of the time, why is gas called "backup"? To fool the naive.
Wind energy is the cleanest form of energy generation by almost every measure: total lifecycle carbon (1% of coal on the full lifecycle and 2% of natural gas), total water usage (1/500th of coal and 1/600th of nuclear), energy payback time and materials payback time. http://www.quora.com/How-long-does-it-take-a-typical-wind-turbine-to-generate-more-power-than-what-was-used-to-create-it/answer/Mike-Barnard http://www.quora.com/How-effective-are-wind-turbines-compared-to-other-sources-of-energy/answer/Mike-Barnard This leads it to be the healthiest choice for humans and wildlife. Choosing wind energy over fossil fuels is choosing to preserve the environment, birds and the health of our children. http://www.quora.com/Wind-Power/How-significant-is-bird-and-bat-mortality-due-to-wind-turbines/answer/Mike-Barnard http://www.quora.com/Wind-Power/Do-wind-turbines-have-an-impact-on-aquifers/answer/Mike-Barnard It is excellent that the US Department of the Interior is not swayed by the false arguments of anti-wind advocates, but considers the evidence and comes down strongly on the side of wind power. Sensible governmental organizations world-wide are doing the same. That's the reason that there are roughly 165,000 wind turbines generating clean, safe, CO2e-neutral electricity world-wide, and why wind generating capacity is on track to exceed nuclear capacity world-wide by 2016.
It will be a great day for the planet and all who inhabit it, when the dinosaurs that push and make outrageous profits from Coal, Oil and Nuclear become extinct. I consider the cost of the military, the Coastguard overseeing cleanups, the groups that study areas after spills, the environmental damage and the costs to fisherman and others as hidden subsidies. Do you believe BP, Exxon or other companies fully reimbursed the government and/or people for the damages they caused? These costs should all be in the price at pump so the true cost is seen. If we drill at home, these costs are still there. There was a time when people hunted whales for their oil. Like it or not times change. Time and money would be better spent switching to renewable energies. This is a jobs program waiting to happen. Even if you do not believe in global warming, doesn't it make sense to use items that will not pollute the oceans, rivers, lakes, land and air? Let???s stop worrying what other countries are going to do. We know our ways of producing energy with fossil fuels and nuclear have negative impacts on water, air, land, fish and wild life. We didn???t realize this when we started but now that we know it would be irresponsible to keep doing things that we know have a negative impact. I understand we cannot change overnight but we should be replacing old facilities with renewable sources be it solar, wind, geothermal or some other undiscovered source that will come along. We are a very creative species we just have to decide to do it.
Energy has driven the world for over a thousand years Wind, Hydro and Solar are the oldest forms of energy giving power to all smart enough to use it. In the last 200 years Coal, Oil and Nuclear has given energy to many worldwide and great power and wealth to only a few. At the cost of many lives in coal Mines, Oil Spills, Radiation, Cancer and Polluting the Air and Water on all of the Earth. Unfortunately for the wicked there is not an unlimited amount of oil on earth. Just the same as the Forest Trees that clean the air and make Oxygen we breath and all living on earth need to Live. As some in denial are not able to recognize or ever see or live with blinders on. Doctors and Drug ceo's have been making millions prescribing drugs to many that live near or by High polluted areas that hurt breathing our lungs and harm our children and all. That we all pay for. When all they need is Clean Air and Water, and Clean Cities. Now common sense would be for all to look for a clean fuel Wind, Hydro, Geothermal and Solar. Renewable Energy is eliminating the need for Dirty Energy Worldwide at a record pace. With Solar Energy Clearly the front runner. To the fear of some of the richest people on Earth. They to surprisingly are doing something extraordinary investing in Solar Energy. After years of many of them trying to under mine it. Fuel that makes energy to ship goods, or make electric for homes and manufacturing. Can transform whole nations into prosperity and wealth or poverty and economic hardships for most all. Just as taxes on taxpayers has done. For over two thousand years. Making slaves of many to the wicked and unjust few. History Lesson Roman Empire, Persian Empire now OIL Empire oh sorry OPEC. The Freedom to get your own Power from the Wind and Sun, Solar Energy has been there for years. Are Libraries and Schools should have been the first to have gone Solar and Renewable Energy. And why are they not? Churches are all over the Planet. They are going to Solar Energy. Thank GOD for the Pioneers like John Schaeffer that Started Real Goods The first and Best catalog for Renewable Energy and Scientist Bill Young at the FSEC Florida Solar Energy Center and Monica D. Key Lindbergh for many years wrote to legislators promoting Solar and Renewable Energy and many others. These Pioneers helped put Wind, Solar And Renewable Energy in the Spotlight for all the World to see. One of The Greatest Scientists ever Albert Einstein Stared it with a Dream that the day would come that all the World would use Solar Energy. His many years of work with the law of the "Photoelectric Effect", and showing this to the World won him the Nobel Prize in Physics. For the "Photoelectric Effect" Free Energy From the SUN in the heavens above. We still do not teach this to our young. Very soon Hybrid Vehicles and (EV's) Electric Vehicles will out number the ones that need oil and gas to go. With the ability to recharge them at home and work from the sun. Tesla Motors with its new Model S electric sedan, will be one of many the World will see soon. Honda, Nissan, Audi,VW, BMW and Volvo are just some of the Car Companies putting into production Electric Vehicles a EV, and many more are and many are building Electric / Hybrid Vehicles. The DeLorean Motor Company will be putting into production by 2013 a DMC-EV Electric DeLorean, that will have a body and power plant that will last you a life time. Just think you can recharge them at home and work free from the sun Solar Energy. The Lord's Little Helper Paul Felix Schott Now to own a car that will never rust way and runs on the power from the sun that's the one for me.
Forget the grid. It is failing everyone all the time. Build small local systems. I have loved off the grid for over 25 years, have all the electric toys and conveniences, and NO POWER OUTAGES like those poor people on the grid! How can people support the grid that fails millions of people at a time. Get a small $500 wind generator, a few pv solar panels, and be safe and secure WITH NO MONTHLY BILLS!
It seems politics has been an overriding factor when it comes to safety concerns with Cape Wind. Following the October 2011 of the US Court of Appeals ruling that the FAA had failed to fully consider the air travel hazard potential of the Cape Cod Wind Farm project there were Freedom of Information filings that have confirmed the courts findings. The documents released have confirmed that local aviation communities concerns over the 440 foot towers were completely ignored in light of political pressure making it impossible for the FAA to refuse a permit for Cape Wind. Back room deals for Cape Wind are an ongoing theme residents of Massachusetts have been forced to deal with. A 2011 a no bid back room agreement forced on the local power grid companies compels them to buy Cape Wind power at more than 50 percent over market prices with locked in price increases for the next 20 years. Regional electricity prices are expected to rise 25 percent the first year Cape wind goes on line. Adding several hundreds of dollars to the annual electricity bills of Massachusetts poor. The locked in price increases will see a more than doubling of electrity rates over the life time of Cape wind. Renewable power that increases poverty is no solution. Now it seems it is not safe either because of back room deals. http://news.bostonherald.com/news/politics/view/20220703brown_calls_for_fed_probe_of_cape_wind_calls_for_fed_probe/ http://www.wind-watch.org/news/2012/06/22/faa-facing-investigation-over-cape-wind-approval/
Wind energy is the cleanest form of energy generation by almost every measure: total lifecycle carbon (1% of coal on the full lifecycle and 2% of natural gas), total water usage (1/500th of coal and 1/600th of nuclear), energy payback time and materials payback time. Until some technology emerges that can efficiently capture and store wind power, it will not be "clean" in the least. As it it exists now, nearly 100% of wind power has to be backed up by conventional sources because of its unreliabilitiy. How "clean" can a windmill be if a coal, gas, or other type of plant must be continually running on "standby" in case the wind stops blowing?
replace one of those batteries, that cost over $20,000. US That, and the fact that a LITTLE EV car goes for around $40,000 new.. And the EV's are great for city dwellers, but not for people that have to commute 40 to 50 miles one way.... EV chargers are non-existant where I live.... Thanks.... TW
In the last 200 years Coal, Oil and Nuclear has given energy to many worldwide and great power and wealth to only a few. And in that same time, a middle class that had never before existed emerged, manual toil practically disappeared, and average lifespans have nearly doubled, especially amongst the poorest in the developed world. The idea that "only a few" have benefited is simply absurd. The fact that you've got the free time and resources to post the above is proof enough of that.
...if for no other reason than to see its consequences imposed upon the "1%'ers" of the cape who overwhelmingly support government mandates upon the rest of Americans; those who usually live elsewhere and out of sight-out of mind of the agenda-setting elites. I only wish that Ted Kennedy had lived to see his view ruined in the name of saving the planet.
You have no vision. This country was created and built by people who had the courage to do things others thought were impossible. Remember before us there were people like Newton, Einstein and Tesla. There are people alive today or yet to be born that have the imagination and genius to create things we cannot even dream of.
This country was created and built by people who had the courage to do things others thought were impossible. Exactly. What it was not created on was people who think they know better telling others how to develop and impliment technology, and siezing the resources to do it their way from those who know better. Spending billions to build windmills without the grid and storage technology developed and in place is putting the cart before the horse; a complete waste of resources, and actually detrimental to the economy and environment.
