New view from Manhattan: A 262-foot wind turbine

By | January 13, 2012, 12:05 PM PST

Head down to the southern tip of Manhattan in the coming week, and you might notice a new addition to the distant view: a solitary 1.5-megawatt wind turbine, rising 262 feet from the banks of the Hudson River.

One turbine can hardly compare to the visual display produced by large-scale wind farms. Still, it will be an interesting NIMBY experiment. For residents of Bayonne, New Jersey, where the turbine is being erected, and New Yorkers alike. If someone in Manhattan’s Battery Park looks southwest they’ll see the Statue of Liberty. From that vantage point, the turbine will be seen directly behind the iconic statue, according to LEITWIND.

The wind turbine, manufactured by Italian-based LEITWIND, will supply power to the city of Bayonne’s Oak Street Pumping Station. Most of the components will be produced at LEITWIND’s Austrian facility. The system will produce around 3.3 gigawatt hours of electricity a year enough to power up to 600 single-family homes. The city’s municipal utilities authority will save an estimated $175,000 a year.

Construction was slated to begin this week, according to the city of Bayonne. The turbine blades and rotary were expected to be erected today.

Industrial Wind Turbines Are Not Green
Industrial wind turbines are a fraudlent product like weight loss supplements that promise you can eat all you want of whatever and still lose weight. WIND TURBINES DO NOT PROVIDE RENEWABLE ENERGY! Not one coal or gas plant the world over has been decommissioned because of IWTs...and eliminating our dependence on fossil fuels is their raison d???etre. To quote an expert: ???Because wind blows intermittently, electric utilities must either keep their conventional power plants running all the time to make sure the lights don???t go dark, or continually ramp up and down the output from conventional coal-or gas-fired generators (called ???cycling???). But coal-fired and gas-fired generators are designed to run continuously, and if they don???t, fuel consumption and emissions generally increase.??? This is happening worldwide, and in places like Colorado and Texas where CO2 and power plant pollution have increased since installing wind farms:

The wind industry is built on crony capitalism, it is the only way it can exist. Taxpayer money builds them and power companies are mandated to buy wind generated power at much higher rates than conventionally produced power. There is no true benefit, except to wind power companies, politicians and lobbyists. Some people and communities that partner with wind developers also profit, but those profits are paid for by surcharges to all other ratepayers and huge taxpayer subsidies. Do away with the special subsidies and they are a money-losing proposition. Plus, this IWT is sited way too close to a popilated neighborhood. The low frequency noise polution from the turbine will affect the health of many in that Bayonne neighborhood and kill their home values. If this were not true, why would Denmark, home to the largest turbine manufacturer Vestas, make it law that homeowners be compensate by developers for loss-of-value. Bayonne will never do that unless sued, which is likely to happen:

Power rating
Can some explain to me how they are going to get 3.3 GWH of power from this site in a year. Where is the data to back this up? What did this cost and how many years will it take to pay it off? These articles with all the numbers with no backup are just PR tricks and prove nothing.

Lack of power
Wind turbines are designed to operate at 27-30% efficiency, yet our tax $ are paying for this hoax. Divide the 600 small family homes by 5 or 6 to get a more accurate figure. If it were not for yours and my tax dollars there would be no large industrial wind turbines. aedoyle is right no coal fired plant has never been shut down because of wind and never will be. Where are the screams of the environmentalists for the depleting of the rare earth metals in the generating head? These are found almost exclusively in China. What about all the iron in the turbine itself? Almost 400,000 pounds. Where are the environmentalists about the lose of wildlife and the destruction of eagles, other birds of prey and the mosquito eating bats? I live in a wind factory. I have seen one deer in the last 4 years since the turbines were erected. I have seen 2 turkeys. We rarely see song birds anymore. Wind proponents say we need wind to save the earth, but instead it is destroying the earth. Many people living near large industrial wind turbines have serious health affects created by the turbines. The only green in wind energy is in the pockets of the developers.

sorry to hear this for the local residents sake
Either one of 2 things happened here:
1) the locals did not pay attention and do their homework
2) the industry duped those who were in a position to let this through.
When the local people wake up and realize the issues concerned with living near one of these things they will be joining the rest of us in fighting them.
Please note it is always the towns that are on the lower end of the economic scale that end up with these as the more affluent towns have the bucks to fight it better.
