Double decker bus sprouts arms, does push ups

By | July 23, 2012, 10:17 AM PDT

Up and down on the double decker. This bus does push ups.

For a light hearted break from the nuclear discourse I’ve been bringing you here on the SmartPlanet energy blog, check out the energetic exertions of a groaning double decker bus in London. The YouTube video below comes David Cerny, a Czech sculptor.

Cerny is also either a great mechanic, or knows one, as he get 6 tons of bus to perform what you might expect to see an aspiring NFL running back do at training camp starting this week. On the eve of the London Olympics, Cerny gives us wonderfully wry, dry, yin yang push up philosophy.

“The thing about the push up is, in the one hand it’s training and exercising for sport activities, but at the same time it’s a punishment in whatever - army, probably prison,” he says. “So it’s in a way very ironic of course.”

Am I the only one wondering...
Is it a functional bus? It almost looks big enough. Street legal? Taking passengers during the Olympics? On display where? I can't be the only one wondering about all the missing details on this "phoned-in" piece!

Hello omb00900 -

I am the slacker who left out those details. I give this blog blood day in and out - original reporting, scoops, exposes, interviews, etc., on all sorts of energy subjects. For just one example, besides the groaning bus, earlier yesterday I put Richard Branson in the nuclear business: http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/intelligent-energy/virgin-nuclear-branson-asks-obama-for-reactor-help-sir-richard-v-bill-gates/17784?tag=header;header-sec.

As a reader bonus, and merely for some light entertainment as I do from time to time (see links at end of story above and think of them almost as the de-facto "comics" section to my energy blog on SmartPlanet) I decided to throw the double decker video up on the site.

And you want more???? Well, I don't blame you!!!! I, too, was wondering the same questions. The answers were not immediately available at the time I wrote, so I decided to post anyway - the amusement value outweighed the lack of additional tidbits.

But, you deserve some answers. So, here is an unverified addendum from various sources: Cerny bought an actual 1957 double decker bus - made by Bristol Commercial Vehicles and previously owned by someone in Holland - and turned it into the athlete you see in the video. It's on display outside the Czech Olympic headquarters in Islington, North London and will not shuttle people around town for the Olympics.

Please let us know if you find out otherwise, or if you dig up any additional insights. Thanks.

Now, will you take me off probation?

Phew!
What a relief!

Now, it's back to slightly less amusing subjects, like global warming http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/intelligent-energy/blink-its-gone-greenlands-surface-ice-melted-2-weeks-ago/17908?tag=search-river, nuclear power and rare earth metals http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/intelligent-energy/solve-the-energy-and-rare-earth-crisis-join-the-thorium-bank/17845?tag=search-river etc., etc. etc!

Still, keep an eye out for the occasional diversion - that is, if you'll permit me. Wait 'til you see what I've discovered robots getting up to, for instance..
