Donald Trump blasts wind in Scotland

By | April 25, 2012, 4:33 AM PDT

Balmedie Beach, near the site of Donald Trump's luxury golf resort in Aberdeenshire.

Question: What’s more important? A) A rich person enjoying an unblemished sea view over perfectly poached eggs prior to a leisurely golf outing. B) Renewable energy.

If you’re Donald Trump, the answer is “A.”

The property billionaire is heading to Scottish Parliament today to oppose a proposed offshore wind farm that he says will spoil the view from the $1.6 billion seaside golf resort he’s building on the country’s northeast coast in Aberdeenshire, the BBC reports.

The 11 giant turbines in Aberdeen Bay would sit about a mile from his luxury hotel, fairways and clubhouse, which he started building in 2010. Trump halted construction of the Trump International Golf Links in January, reportedly to apply pressure against the wind farm’s approval.

First Minister Alex Salmond: Money doesn't own Scotland.

His testimony to Parliament’s economy committee today will be the latest twist in his vocal opposition to wind farms in Scotland, which play a major role in First Minister Alex Salmond’s ambitious goal to generate 100 percent of Scotland’s electricity consumption from renewable sources by 2020.

Trump has in the past referred to Scotland’s wind turbines as “financial suicide” that would turn the country and its landscape into a “third world wasteland that global investors will avoid.” He has plenty of backing from other wind opponents in Scotland. Prior to heading to Parliament in Edinburgh, he was due to speak with protest group Communities Against Turbines Scotland.

Trump’s remarks have steeled First Minister Salmond, whose country could benefit economically from the resort, but who is determined not to let an extravagant tycoon pull the strings.

Salmond said yesterday that an investment such as Trump’s in the country “does not imply ownership of Scotland.” The Scottish leader has said that offshore wind as a whole is worth £30 billion ($48 billion) and 28,000 jobs to the Scottish economy. He also pointed out that tourism has been rising since Scotland started installing turbines, thus refuting Trump’s claim that unsightly turbines will keep people away.

A guy with a lot of money.

The £150 million ($242 million) wind farm in Aberdeen Bay would be a joint effort by Swedish utility Vatenfall, engineering firm Technip, and Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group.

Trump’s resort in Scotland has triggered controversy from its earliest days of planning, overcoming opposition from people who were flat out opposed to it. Trump received approval to develop in a conservation area known for its beauty, sand dunes and wading birds. His opposition to wind farms as ugly strikes many people as hypocrisy.

Wind turbines have run into plenty of opposition both on land and sea. How far away from civilization do these things have to go before “I can’t stand the sight of ‘em” no longer works in opposition?  We may soon have the answer. The industry is developing “floating” off shore turbines that can roam atop deep waters far, far offshore because they don’t have to attach to the seabed.  The US and UK earlier this week announced plans to jointly advance the technology.

Even there, expect to hear some lonely mariner growl about ugly floaters, although I’m not sure how much lobbying power he’ll have. His name probably won’t be Trump.

UK record on wind farms.
There are many wind farms in the UK that are paid NOT to produce power.

Why build another if they cannot use the capacity they have?

Wind Power a Beautiful Sight
I just don't get it. When I see dozens of wind turbines dotting a countryside, I consider it a beautiful and inspiring sight. Power is being produced with zero greenhouse gases. What can be better than saving our natural environment? I personally think that there are worse things than seeing a few wind turbines blowing in the breeze off the coast.

One person should not hold an entire country hostage to his one development and his single-minded ideas. Scotland should proceed with the power plan. The resort folks will get used to the wind turbines, just like they got used to paying high prices for waterfront property. Acceptance of green energy is a worldwide phenomenon. Get used to it Donald.

Agree on beauty, but why?
Yes there is something majestic about a 300 foot turbine, but why build more when they cannot handle the power capacity they currently have?

Maybe they should invest the money in upgrading their grid so they can get the maximum benefit out of their existing turbines.

Or are you a fan of giving taxpayer dollars to billionaires to keep their turbines idle at the very times they should be cranking out their maximum output?

Donald may be a blow hard, but the bottom line is the UK is not using the wind capacity it already has in hand.

Wind Turbines
Trump should appreciate the beauty of alternative energy. Maybe an alternative solar farm if he doesn't like the wind turbines.

Golf
Most golf resorts are an eyesore but you can't say that in a room full of people. Kind of like suggesting that the NFL not use re-development fiunds not to build football stadiums.

What an idiot
Trump is not known for his intelligence. As the British call he is a "double distilled" idiot. All he cares about is how to make a quick buck. He is probably worried that his toupee may fly off due to the wind mill! He does not even know what is the meaning of a wind mill. He should stay put in his "Taj Mahal" or "Trump Tower" and keep his mouth shut. So he will "look intelligent".

True
I am surprised that people still listen to him. How can you build a casino and lose money in a gambling oasis?

Trump is an idiot, but you are ideological slaves.
All of you have this fantasy vision of wind power, but you ignore the horrible truth of wind in the UK.

In most places the grid cannot handle the maximum output of the wind farms.

Billionaires are getting paid millions in taxpayer money to NOT GENERATE POWER.

That is absurd. To support it is moronic.

At least fix the grid for the existing wind farms before you go installing more wind farms.

Show some intelligence of your own before bashing others.

True enough
If Trump was really smart, he's be building Potemkin windmills to collect subsidies, and then promoting his golf course as the "world's greenest".

Trump and wind
Maybe the Scottish Government should recruit Donald Trump as he has more wind in him than comes off of the Atlantic. He is an arrogant bag of wind.

WIND TURBINES
Unbelievable, but apparently true to character. Trump is a man who received serious consideration for the Republican candidacy for United States President. I can't get my mind around the outrage I feel about that.

wind isn't "green"
wind power is a big boondoggle, near useless (and ridiculously expensive) as a power source and is a supreme eyesore.

What gets me is the duplicity of the "greenies" regarding the eyesore aspect. There are people denied permits to build utility buildings on their farms because it would destroy the "viewshed," a typically trendy "resource." You can no longer build outdoor advertising because it clutters the landscape.

But these unavoidably monstrous bat and bird killers are "beautiful." Tell that to my friend who's house has been pelted with ice flung off a nearby windmill all winter long.

Not to mention the noise these things put out. My friend says it's insidious, it doesn't assault you up front, rather it wears on you, after a time you can't ignore the repetitive sound. He says it really effects your mood.

I'm not defending Trump, but in this case he's right, inadvertently.

BTW "climate change" is not an issue, other than that it's sad that people can be led down any rosy path the global elite choose. Pollution is a real issue.

All about himself
There is no question the UK will have to upgrade it's grid system and I have no doubt they will. As far as Trump goes I like many Americans think he's just about himself. What does he care that renewable energy is a must. Rising cost of fossil fuel does not effect him since he's so wealthy. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth and Scotlands Parliament should shove it down his throat. So tired about hearing how this man always has to have his own way. Don't understand why some think wind turbines are unsightly as Trump does. Maybe he should take a long look at himself and please explain what the hell is that on top of his skull, combover or bad toupee!

RE: all about himself
Just live near one of the b****rds and see how beautiful they are after the low frequency noise wears you down day after day, night after night and you end up picking up bird pieces everywhere - and to think my tax money is paying subsidies for this useless pap. It wouldn't survive if it had to pay for itself. I'd much rather look at a golf course than wind turbines, not to mention the afforsaid subsidies are costing you far more than the rising cost of fossil fuels. A great deal of the UK's (and Scotland's) rising and continued high energy costs are taxes, not the feedstocks or the actual end products.

Trump, windfarms and Scotland
Much as I hate to agree with Donald Trump on this occasion I have little choice.
Apart from all the environmental issues lots of wind farms make little sense energy generation wise. Sometimes the wind does stop blowing in Scotland and when it does (like everywhere else) there has to be a full complement of power stations ready to step in. And of course they have to be largely up and running at all times because they can't be switched on and off like light bulbs. Worse yet when Scottish windfarms and power stations are over producing the Scottish Goverment has to buy the windfarm generated electricity it doesn't need!

Wind generators
Who would have 'thunk' it? Trump is the same as the Kennedys; both are NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard-ers)~! I should have known (both are fervent believers in the 'Golden Rule', if you have Gold, you Rule)~! Neither wants wind generator towers near them, where they feel "they spoil my view"~! If everyone could afford their own power generating plants, they wouldn't need to have such near them, spoiling their view. Unfortunately, only a few can. To these, I say, buy out ALL the others who would share the output of these 'wind'mills, and you can have your 'druthers'~!

Donald Trump blasts wind in Scotland
Donald's should be more concerned about that cheap hair piece that he wears, if he's lucky a well placed turbine will blow it off his fat head
