Our colleagues at CNET have scored a VIP tour of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Nuclear Research Reactor.

The campus reactor facility has been in operation since 1958, and is used for medical imaging research as well as to develop new nuclear technologies.

The associate director of research development at the lab told CNET that there has been a marked increase in the number of students studying nuclear engineering. Nuclear energy has recently received a boost in Europe and the United States as a source of “clean” power to help address climate change.

Your article really had nothing to do with the headline. Good link bait.

RE: A 1950s nuclear reactor schools Millennials at MIT
When I was a wee pup, probably in 1964, the local university had an open house at their research reactor. They let us go up on the cat walk around the top of the tank and look down and watch the rods go up and down and see the dim blue glow. They would also put dimes in the neutron port and make 'em radioactive. (Of course the radioactive isotope of silver has a VERY short half life, just a few seconds.)

My how things have changed.

Seems like that reactor was about the same age, but is long gone, dismantled and cleaned up, 'cause it used bomb-grade highly enriched uranium.

My understanding is that there is a big movement to shut down these research reactors, especially ones in foreign countries. Rather than being seen as a research tool, these are now seen as possible sources of materials for dirty bombs.

Wzackers. correct. this particular reactor is in the process of migrating to a less enriched 'fuel.'
