Industrial designers are in demand, and these programs are shaping the skills of the best in the country.

Industrial design has always been a sexy job, if only in the minds of industrial designers. Then Apple and its sleek, user-friendly consumer electronics became household items and suddenly, industrial design became sexy to a much wider swath of society.

Among those new converts are, of course, prospective industrial designers. If you are among this group, we send you this message: get cracking! The more great industrial designers out there, the more innovative new products and systems, the more great stuff we'll be able to cover here at Smart Planet.

With that in mind, here is a list of the ten best industrial design graduate school programs, according to U.S. News and World Report:

1: Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI

2: Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA

3: Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA

4: Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI

5: California College of the Arts, San Francisco, CA

6: Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY

7: Ohio State University, Columbus, OH

8: Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY

9: School of Visual Arts, New York, NY

...and the number 10 spot is a tie between School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, and the decidedly less urban (despite its name) but more engineering-focused University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, IL
