Performers in the Los Angeles Philharmonic production of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” will be sporting some seriously fashionable togs this coming May. Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the fashion design darlings behind Rodarte, are set to design the production’s costumes, reports the Los Angeles Times.
This will mark the duo’s first foray into opera costumes, but not their first into the performing arts — they created ballet costumes used in last year’s Academy Award-winning film Black Swan.
L.A. is home to the Mulleavy sisters, and their work has been featured in a solo exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and is part of the permanent collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which is currently running a special Rodarte exhibit of gowns inspired by Italian Renaissance frescoes Fra Angelico.
Rodart’s work, combined with that of prolific opera producer Christopher Alden and set design from Frank Gehry, will likely add a decidedly modernist tone to the production.
The decision to join the Don Giovanni production was an easy one, they told the newspaper, since their grandmother was an opera singer.
