For commuters, a foldable bicycle helmet that saves space and heads

By | February 10, 2012, 10:18 AM PST

While bicycle helmets aren’t the clunky, heavy units of old, there isn’t a lot of room to change their shape– that is if you want adequate protection. In the end, no matter the technological innovation that made them lighter or more comfortable, helmets are still a hassle to store when not being used.

In fact, one of the main reasons people don’t wear helmets nearly as much as they should has to do with the inconvenience of post-ride storage. Many would rather risk their safety than find a place to put their helmet later.

In a move that seeks to remedy this problem, French designer Patrick Jourffret and engineer Phillipe Arrouart from Agence 360 have designed a helmet that folds down to a compact size to be stored more easily when not in use.

The helmet, called the “overade” is for both men and women, and its designers claim that it provides as much protection as a normal, modern helmet. Only it can fit into a purse.

Jouffret and Arrouart hope that by making storing a helmet easier, they can help encourage riders to wear them more often. The helmet was designed in 2010 and the designers expect production sometime soon.

What do you think? Does this helmet seem safe? Would you be more likely to wear a helmet if it were an easier size to store and transport?

Helmut head
If you were to have an accident, won't that fold in on your head? It doesn't seem that safe. Not sure I'd be comfortable wearing a helmet that can fold like that. Mind you, I do think it's a great idea as a lot of people do complain about the lack of portability of helmets.
