For Japan, a mobile concert hall

Written by Sun Kim, Contributor

Architect Arata Isozaki and artist Anish Kapoor are collaborating on the design of a mobile concert hall dubbed Ark Nova. Sponsored by the Lucerne Festival, the Ark Nova will tour regions of Japan devastated by the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011.

Kapoor is leading the design of the exterior shell while Isozaki is solving the construction of the structure. Isozaki is also laying out the program of performance spaces and seating for 500 to 700 spectators.

Concept drawings and models show the hallmark brightly colored, simple and organic form of Kapoor's sculptures. The 75 foot high Ark Nova is being developed as an inflatable structure of lightweight, elastic material that will be easily erected and dismantled.

The Lucerne Festival and the artists intend Ark Nova to provide 'music as a way to bring hope and promise to survivors of the massively catastrophic earthquake of 11 March 2011 and those mourning the loss of loved ones'. The first performances are planned for late spring 2012.
