Women in Architecture infographic

By | March 20, 2012, 12:44 PM PDT

ArchDaily’s Women in Architecture infographic illustrates the incredible history of women architects while asking, “Why has the number of women in architecture fallen?”

Unsurprisingly, the answer could be related to the fact that 48% of women said they are paid less than their male counterparts, 11% said they experience sexual discrimination at least once a week, and 36% said they had difficulties resuming their career after having children - according to the The Architects Journal’s first Women in Architecture survey.

The survey questioned almost 700 women about career challenges, mothering, sexual discrimination, and financial compensation. The dismal results were not shocking to many in the field.

The infographic also drew data from The Association for Women in Architecture and the American Institute of Architects.

SmartPlanet covered the Women of Architecture series hosted by the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. for International Women’s Day. The event both celebrated women in the field while discussing how women’s contributions could gain momentum and support. While ArchDaily’s infographic has received criticism for being US-centric, it definitely keeps the conversation going.
