Want a shorter commute? A new tool finds the perfect place to live

By | September 27, 2011, 7:30 PM PDT

Walk Score is already a popular tool for exploring the walkability of your city. Now, their latest project will help you find the commutability of your workplace, and maybe even save you precious time on your daily commute.

The new Apartment Search tool helps you find apartments within a certain commute time. What makes this tool so dynamic is that you can search based on the commute length you want and also by the mode of transportation you want to take — you can choose from public transportation, car, bike, and walking. On top of all that you can get even more picky by selecting the walk score of the area you want to live in.

Check it out. Say you work at the White House (and your last name isn’t Obama). You’re looking to move closer to cut back on your hour-long commute. You want to walk to work and you want to be able to do it in about 30 minutes. Here’s where you should think about living:

The map also integrates apartment listing on Craigslist so you don’t have to go back and forth to see if the apartment is within your preference range. Of course, if you’re looking to buy a place you’re out of luck, but at least you’ll have an idea of where to look.

Would you use the tool next time you’re looking to move?

Great
The highest score was 69, a room-mate in a condo for $450 a month. It claims it's a 16 minute walk. Of course you have to cross a major highway intersection. The last time I walked to the restaurant on the opposite corner, it took me 16 minutes to get the the restaurant I can see from the front door of my office; it's practically across the street. You have to cross three different cross walks to get to the place tha's 450 feet away.

Oh, and that 16 minute walk... Tyler, you can have it. You rent a room and a bath in a shared condo for $450, and then you walk for 30 minutes (not 16 as claimed-I know exactly where those condos are) in the 105 degree heat. Oh, and there are showers or lockers in our office building. No thanks.

We don't all live in the District of Columbia or on Manhattan Island.

Walk Score
Is it 105 degrees every day? No. Also, a 16 minute walk isn't that bad. In fact, it is recommended that Americans should walk at least 30 minutes a day.

Housing and business
Where I live, we have zoned land which maintains a decent amount of distance between dense residential, acreage, commercial and industrial. Sure, there are commercial venues within walking distance to my house, but none of them would come anywhere *NEAR* what is required to have an income to live in the county where I live. A recent study where I live shows that in order to just *live* in my neighborhood requires an income of no less than $100k/year. And in my county, any income below $60k/yr is poverty level! The only way to make that amount of money is to commute to the city or industrial centers...where there is no housing anymore...unless you want to live in a paltry 1000sq/ft apartment...which is not an option!

Re: Housing and business
1,000 square ft is not paltry. FYI.
