It’s hard to imagine, but America’s suburban sprawl is so all-encompassing that there is only one place in the lower 48 where you can be at least 100 miles away from the nearest McDonald’s.

Here it is, the “McFarthest Spot,” 107 miles from the nearest McDonald’s, as determined by scientist and data-visualization geek Stephen von Worley. Out here in the desert on the Oregon / Nevada border, the true emptiness that comprises the few remaining in-between spaces in our country makes itself felt.

20 Miles A Day
This is good to know. If you have at least 5 days worth of water you can always walk to civilization from anywhere in the continental USA!

Too Much Trivia
My life is now complete that I know where the one spot in the USA is that is over 100 miles from McDonalds. May I never go there!

Stark Beauty
The lack of McDonalds or nearly anything else adds to the stark beauty of the desert. Another benefit for the area is that the night sky there has the least light pollution and makes seeing all the stars more dramatic.

I like knowing there is at least one place in the world...
...that is sensory-overload free.

I've been there...
or at least close to it. It's stark open range country. Don't try to go there in the winter unless you know what you are doing. Unprepared people die in that sort of country.
