New website makes sharing city data easier

Four major cities have made their data available on a new website.

It's now possible to get data from Chicago, Seattle, New York, and San Francisco in one place.

The four cities were the first to share their data on the new website Cities.data.gov, part of the federal government's Data.gov website. The new site not only has data available for developer to create apps, but also resources to help you find all the apps available from the participating cities.

The more cities put their data on the site, as is expected, the more important the resource will become over time. But, for now, it's a good start with some big, tech-savvy cities.

"I think it's really going to open people’s eyes to the power of data and what we can all do with it," San Francisco's Chief Information Officer Jon Walton told Government Technology. “If we get people out of these silos, and we start sharing it, the development community, the public, the government itself, we're going to see more and more benefits over time.”

According to Government Technology, the data portal is the first major project from a group of big city CIOs.

If your city isn't part of the initial group of cities with data available, you can contact City.data.gov here and they will let your city know about the website and that there's interest in open data from your city.
