NASA captures Las Vegas sprawl from space

By | March 12, 2012, 9:09 PM PDT

For the past 40 years, Las Vegas, like many American cities, has struggled to get a handle on its urban sprawl. Now, a new satellite video from NASA shows just how much the city grew away from its urban core. The video shows the city’s growth spurt from 1972, when the metro area had a population of about 300,000, to 2010, when it reached nearly 2 million people. Check out NASA’s video:

According to NASA, the large red areas are generally green space, golf courses or city parks, and the gray areas are infrastructure. The images were taken by NASA’s Landsat satellites and were created “using reflected light from the near-infrared, red and green portions of the electromagnetic spectrum,” NASA said. The Landsat satellites aren’t just good for observing the rate of urbanization in cities, they are also helping with other studies, NASA explains:

Landsat data have been instrumental in increasing our understanding of forest health, storm damage, agricultural trends, urban growth, and many other ongoing changes to our land resources. Studies using Landsat data have helped land managers keep track of the pace of urbanization in locations around the world.

It's like cancer or a virus spreading
And it's horrible to think that we are that disease, killing the earth slowly.

Makes one wonder..
Like Dukhalion says, Vegas is a cancer that is spreading. No water, and the fools keep on building. The casinos and resorts keep on wasting the water, and the people that buy into the (fool's) dream of owning a house/home are going to be surprised eventually. I drive by the Hoover Dam/ Lake Mead/ Las Vegas area at least 4 times a year, and watch the lake get lower, and lower, and lower.

Interesting video
My first memory of Las Vegas is from around 1972, where the video starts. I remember it being mostly desert beyond the strip and the airport.

But then again, I remember a lot of placed being like that.

It's all so old fashioned...
Their oblivious nature of the dwindling fossil fuels supplies.
Their inherent inability to choose unlimited clean energy (advanced nuclear like LFTR and robotically mass produced solar and the LiFePO4 battery, etc) over certain doomsday.
Their willingness to allow governments to use their children, to create sooo many new and unnecessary laws.

It's no wonder they lost their future...
(And ya, I'm trapped too, just like the rest of us).

What supports all that grass?
Irrigation.

A great example of the poor misuse of water in an area that averages between 3.5 and 4.5 inches of rain a year depending on which government agency you trust the numbers from.

In a word this development is UNSUSTAINABLE.
