7 of the world’s most innovative cities

By | January 23, 2012, 8:01 AM PST

The Intelligent Community Forum announced their top seven intelligent communities of the year, with a special focus this year on innovation.

Generally, the top seven communities on the annual list “provide a model of economic and social development in the 21st Century using information and communications technology to power growth, address social challenges and preserve and promote culture.”

This year, along with those qualities, there was a special emphasis placed on innovation. Indicators of innovation on this list include: broadband connectivity, knowledge workforce, digital inclusion, and marketing and advocacy.

Of the 364 applications in the competition this year, here are the top seven innovative cities:

Austin, Texas
Oulu, Finland
Quebec City, Quebec, Canada
Riverside, California
Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada
Stratford, Ontario, Canada
Taichung City, Taiwan

From this list, the Intelligent Community of the Year will be chosen in June. Previous recipients of the award have been cities like Stockholm, Singapore, and New York.

Austin, Texas??
Isn't that the place where they put a guy who believes in psychic spoon-bending in charge of their Center for Advanced Studies? OK, Russell Targ has a higher IQ than all the damn cattle in Texas -- but doesn't intelligence include a bit more than that?
