Why you should study climate change stats closely

By | August 21, 2009, 3:56 AM PDT

Lest some members of your executive teams have some question about whether climate change is a relevant topic for your boardroom, I advise you to have them read this essay called “Why Climate Change Will Matter to Every Company, by two analysts/advisors from BSR, which is one of the sustainability consulting firms.

The authors’ contention is that climate change policy isn’t just a concern for energy or heavy manufacturing companies but a concern of every type of industry.

Forget for a moment, the physical impact of not doing anything. Your executive team should concern itself with climate change for the simple reason that the U.S. Congress is debating the issue, and it may have an impact on federal policy regarding international trade, agriculture and transportation. Just for starters.

So, even if you do nothing, the U.S. government may do something for you, which may come in the form of taxes, fees, levies or more compliance obligations. You shouldn’t wait around and the essay I’ve referenced above provides some pretty specific illustrations of what that is so.

I am fascinated about how businesses of all sizes can transform their operations through technology -- not just to make themselves more efficient, but to rise above their competitors. That's the theme for my two ZDNet blogs, Small Business Matters and Next-Gen Partner. For SmartPlanet, I'm focused on profiling inspirational and controversial business leaders who have great leadership lessons to share. I also write regularly and passionately about corporate social responsibility and sustainability issues for GreenBiz.com.

Occasionally, I will pop up at an industry conference in some sort of speaking capacity. In cases where an engagement involves a sponsor that may be covered in this blog, that fact will be disclosed in coverage as appropriate.

My corporate writing work usually consists of crafting research white papers about some aspect of technology or moderating Webcasts. In the event that my commentary (in written, audio or video form) mentions a company for which I have provided consulting advice, I will disclose that fact. However, there is no connection between these projects and topics that I cover in my blogs.

Looks like consultants found you need what they offer
First off I am a consultant. This looks like a report by BSR advocating you do what they offer and therefore is not unbiased. It looks like it advocates doing something before you know what the government may require you to do. IMHO, I think there is better ways to invest in your business.

A different practical essay writing tip
A different practical essay writing tip is to make sure you commit enough time for evaluating all of the areas of your preferred subject matter. Study as much appropriate material as you possibly can, and generate notes along the way so that you don't forget anything.
