Wal-Mart funds development of new greenhouse gas accounting tools

Written by Heather Clancy, Contributor

The World Resources Institute (WRI) has received a grant from sustainability maven Wal-Mart that will go toward the development of tools that businesses can use to measure greenhous gas emissions related to their supply chain and to gauge the impact of the products that they sell.

The tools will be modeled after the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard, which was development by WRI and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development back in 1998.

WRI also is working on what it is calling a "Green Standards Guide" that hopes to decipher and debunk all the various green certifications and eco-labels that are being used in the business-to-business and business-to-consumer marketplaces. This guide will be delivered over the Web.

Here are more details on the relationship.
