Real people talking about real wind project

By | April 18, 2010, 2:52 PM PDT

I haven’t been in the presence of wind turbines that often, just a couple times last year when I was snowmobiling in New York state. I live in a fairly suburban area where it’s unlikely that these somewhat eerie, ethereal structures could be sited. So, I’m frankly not acquainted with the political arguments for and against their existence.

The video I’ve embedded here actually features residents from Cohocton, New York, talking about the impact of a wind farm on their communities. It’s mostly the pros, because the video was produced by the company behind the farm, First Wind, but it’s a good educational bit if your community is mulling a wind development project.

Writing publicly about what the high-tech industry is actually doing to help itself and the world get greener or more sustainable is one way I figure I can contribute more meaningfully to said effort. I'm also a big OMG-kind-of-fan of smart leadership, which is why the goodly folks who publish this blog let me go on about this topic and why I am always on the hunt for forward-looking business management ideas.

My daily writing is focused on looking for topics for my blogs, GreenTech Pastures and Business Brains. I also write often about emerging technology trends such as mobile computing, unified communications and cloud computing. Occasionally, I will pop up at an industry conference in some sort of speaking capacity. In cases where a speaking engagement involves a sponsor that may be covered in this blog, that fact will be disclosed in coverage as appropriate.

My corporate writing work usually consists of crafting research white papers about some aspect of technology. In the event that my commentary (in written, audio or video form) mentions a company for which I have provided consulting advice, I will disclose that fact. However, there is no connection between these projects and the topics that I'm covering in my blog.

RE: Real people talking about real wind project
I live in Stuttgart Germany where wind and solar energy is a commonly accepted and utilized resource. Electricity is expensive in Europe and most of the EU have enthusiastically embraced wind and solar as the less expensive alternative to fossil fuel and nuclear options. the biggest advantages are the payback period (10 years for wind, 8 years for solar) and the environmentally friendly impact. Sure these big towers may stand out in a pristine rural setting BUT they are beautiful in themselves and when properly situated, actually enhance the view. Solar being at ground level are almost invisible. It sure beats the hell out of telephone poles, electrical transmission towers and crap filled billboards advertising cigarettes! The wonderful thing is that any nation that succeeds in generating the majority of its energy needs using these and other environmentally friendly resources also becomes energy independent...no more dependence on our Middle or Far Eastern amigos to strangle us with their capricious monopoly on energy.
