New report ranks 15 global sustainability services experts

By | January 13, 2011, 6:53 AM PST

If you work for a large global enterprise and you’re wondering who can help you out with figuring out how to use technology to meet some of your corporate sustainability goals, you might want to consider a new list of services experts published by British consulting firm Verdantix. The report, “Green Quadrant Sustainable Technology Services,” considers 15 different companies that started out as IT services firms but that are morphing into expertise in providing technology solutions that could be instrumental in meeting and measuring corporate sustainability goals.

The three firms who get the most attention as leaders in the report are Deloitte, IBM and Logica, because they appear to have the broadest ranges of expertise so far.

As the sustainability services outsourcing movement matures, Verdantix suggests that large companies might consider looking for outside expertise when starting projects that require the following areas of capabilities:

  • Energy and carbon data collection
  • Building energy efficiency
  • Sustainability reporting
  • Renewable energy expertise
  • Intelligent transport
  • Climate change risk assessment
  • Sustainability product lifecycle assessment
  • Utility smart grid
  • Data center energy efficiency
  • Water management
  • Electric vehicle infrastructure and operations

All of the companies listed in the Verdantix report touches at least some of these services, but only a few are yet capable of delivering the entire portfolio. Aside from the companies I already mentioned, the report considers Capgemini, Computer Sciences, Hewlett-Packard, Wipro, Orange Business Services, BT Global Services, Hitachi Consulting, Atos Origin, Infosys, Accenture, Fujitsu Services and TCS.

Forrester Research has also published a similar report rating experts in using technology for sustainability, where many of the same companies are considered, along with a few additional companies.

I am fascinated about how businesses of all sizes can transform their operations through technology -- not just to make themselves more efficient, but to rise above their competitors. That's the theme for my two ZDNet blogs, Small Business Matters and Next-Gen Partner. For SmartPlanet, I'm focused on profiling inspirational and controversial business leaders who have great leadership lessons to share. I also write regularly and passionately about corporate social responsibility and sustainability issues for GreenBiz.com.

Occasionally, I will pop up at an industry conference in some sort of speaking capacity. In cases where an engagement involves a sponsor that may be covered in this blog, that fact will be disclosed in coverage as appropriate.

My corporate writing work usually consists of crafting research white papers about some aspect of technology or moderating Webcasts. In the event that my commentary (in written, audio or video form) mentions a company for which I have provided consulting advice, I will disclose that fact. However, there is no connection between these projects and topics that I cover in my blogs.

Most are legit, but....
I see one service that is a complete fraud and a scam. Maybe I?ll get into it for a few quick bucks this summer.

Anyone care to venture a guess which?
