Posting in Energy
Paper products company has purchased enough renewable energy certificates to cover consumption for the next three years.
Just read where Kimberly-Clark, maker of Kleenex and Huggies (to name just two brands) plans to purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Constellation Energy in order to offset the electric consumption of its headquarters location in Dallas.
The RECs are Green-e Energy Certified. They are related to wind energy facilities throughout Texas. The certificates cover the period from July 2011 through June 2014 and are worth something like 3,300 megawatt-hours of electricity annually.
Personally speaking, I tend to think of RECs as just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to moving toward corporate sustainability. But Kimberly-Clark has just adopted a whole set of new corporate sustainability goals, of which these RECs are just one part.
- 25 percent reduction in water use
- Move to 100 percent certified fiber
- Reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 5 percent
- Achieve zero waste to landfill
My blog post from early June spells out some of these goals in more detail.

If you could turn media bullsh-t into energy this REC thing would be like the 1st, honest to God, working perpetual motion machine. As stated by other contributors this is simply a scam perpetrated by folks like Al Gore who stand to benefit financially without any real gains to energy and resource sustainability.
Libero ??? a leading diaper company in Europe - has made great strides to do things right! The mostly-mothers who purchase Libero diapers support Libero's above-board approach (healthy for your baby, healthy for you, healthy for the planet) with a high measure of Loyalty. And get this: Libero is far ahead of Huggies in their customer loyalty program because of a secret leading-edge, pattern-recognition approach they use in their loyalty program ??? an approach that allows them to listen to, and to actually produce, diapers which their customers (and most importantly ??? their customers' babies) like. Their diaper products are top-of-the-line 'green' diapers. By the way, 'Libero' means 'free', and from all I've researched, Danish babies feel that way, thanks to Libero.
The scam has been covered but what about the millions and millions of non biodegradable huggies going into our landfill sites.
The whole idea of carbon offsets and RECs is worse than a scam. It is a method for the alleged problem to just keep right on happening while paying your way out of some sense of social guilt. I do not give any company or individual any credit for intelligent resource stewardship when I hear they have bought into this sham. Either make the effort to reduce consumption, reduce waste, etc., in REAL, measurable terms, or don't. Only those efforts really make any difference. Of course, I've really got to hand it to the clowns that are collecting the free money for these certificates....
about the pollution they pump out because they paid someone to operate a wind turbine. If global warming is really happening this scam does nothing to fix the problem. I'll bet this option was cheaper than actually buying power from the wind farm.
...who does the same thing to justify his multiple mansions and global private jet travel. It's all one need do to get a pass with that crowd.
... except as a convenient whipping boy for the anti-warmist crowd. They have no science to present for their position so they turn to vilifying people like Gore, Michael Mann and Phil Jones.
In the 1970's papers on global warming outnumbered papers on global cooling by over 4 to 1. Some of the global cooling papers got sensationalized by Time and Newsweek so everyone thinks that was the dominant paradigm but it wasn't.
Likewise, whichever way the pendulum swings, you must be right, right? And in the '70s, the threat wasn't "warming" but "cooling". In another hundred years, you'd be quoting someone who predicted cooling 100 years ago. Hardly an argument.
In 1896 Svante Arrhenius stated "if the quantity of carbonic acid* increases in geometric progression, the augmentation of the temperature will increase nearly in arithmetic progression." Subsequent investigation has not overturned that statement, just refined it. The increase in carbonic acid in the atmosphere is irrefutably mostly from human sources, hence the A(thropogenic) in AGW. *Carbonic acid was a common reference to CO2 at the time.
...is that "Only in non-scientific" circles know it's a fraud. AGW has always been the lie that's been repeated over-and-over for the last 20 years.
... and the science of Mann & Jones has been exposed for what it always was; a load of hot air. Only in non-scientific denier circles is this considered a truism. If you keep repeating a lie over and over eventually it might stick. I doubt you could even get Richard Lindzen or Roy Spencer to join in that lie.
...since the Gore is a bad a politician as he is a scientist, and the science of Mann & Jones has been exposed for what it always was; a load of hot air. Oh, and then there's Rajendra Pachauri the jester.
