In one word, how would you describe 2009?

By | January 3, 2010, 8:42 PM PST

Adiós, 2009. It was a year to remember… Now if we could only think of a way to describe it.

On December 31st, NPR’s Andy Carvin asked people on Facebook and Twitter to summarize 2009 in a single word. He reports he received around 5,000 replies in just a few hours, and arranged 500 of the results in a visual cloud on Wordle.net.

A random sampling of 500 words used to summarize 2009, as submitted to us by Twitter and Facebook users.(Wordle.net)

Top words describing 2009 submitted to NPR (Wordle.net)

The top choices for words for 2009 include the following:

  • Change
  • Challenging
  • Bittersweet
  • Tumultuous
  • Awesome
  • Exhausting

I think “exhausting” is a great way to describe the year just passed. But I prefer to think positively, so another word that popped up, “educational,” may say it better — in kind of an understated way. We learned that the world is linked into a single economy, and when one part is disrupted, the entire world feels it. We also learned the value of collaboration at all levels to lift our economies and businesses.

What word would you use to describe the year just passed?

Terrifying
I am terrified with the direction our nation started moving in 2009. And 2010 will be worse.

Bush was a bad President, but Obama is going to do so much more damage if allowed to.

If passed, cap and trade will make home heating oil and natural gas so expensive that experts on poverty predict thousands of deaths a year because people will not be afford to heat their homes. To make matter worse there are no viable alternatives in the needed quantities to affordably replace oil and natural gas for home heating.

The ?czar? who is supposed to make our schools safer is an admitted supporter of pedophiles.

The Presidents chief advisor on health care was at the center of the largest patient abuse incident in the history of this nation back in the 1980?s.

We have Navy Seals being court marshaled for punching a terrorist in the stomach during his capture over 5 years ago.

Homeland Security has gone into the toilet and the people in the White House act like the Christmas Day bombing attempt was no big deal because it failed.

All I can say on that topic is, we got lucky.

And what is my word for 2010?

Fearful.

funny, when i saw the teaser for your post, i decided to ask myself how i saw the year before checking to see what others have already said. Exhausting. I would love to find 2010 to be Enervating, by contrast. I'll just have to make that happen for myself.

Why would you want 2010 to weaken or destroy the strength or vitality of: "the luxury which enervates and destroys nations" (Henry David Thoreau). See Synonyms at deplete.
2. Medicine To remove a nerve or part of a nerve.

oh-k. There's a lot of meaning there. There's been some new
developments leading to a lot of ohh.. and ahhs. There have been some
developments that haven't lived up to their hype - oh.. are you still
here. There there's the market fallout. OH! But in the end, we
survived. We're oh-k.
