Enterprise charges up electric-car rentals with Volt

By | January 6, 2011, 11:55 AM PST

The idea that rental car companies will continue to be instrumental in the adoption of electric vehicles continues to pick up momentum. By the end of January, Enterprise Rent-A-Car hopes to be the first rental car company to offer extended-range versions of the Chevrolet Volt. The first location to get the vehicles will be the Mark Christopher Auto Center in Ontario, Calif.

Here’s Enterprise’s rationale for the investment:

“Purchase demand for electric vehicles has been impressive, and we anticipate similar demand from rental customers. Making the Volt available will provide an extended test drive for curious customers, for those with cars being serviced, and for those interested in possibly purchasing an EV.”

Other models will be offered at certain Enterprise rental locations this year, including 500 Nissan Leafs. Charging stations are important, obviously, and they have already been installed in the company’s offices in Los Angeles, San Diego and Santa Monica, Calif.

I am fascinated about how businesses of all sizes can transform their operations through technology -- not just to make themselves more efficient, but to rise above their competitors. That's the theme for my two ZDNet blogs, Small Business Matters and Next-Gen Partner. For SmartPlanet, I'm focused on profiling inspirational and controversial business leaders who have great leadership lessons to share. I also write regularly and passionately about corporate social responsibility and sustainability issues for GreenBiz.com.

Occasionally, I will pop up at an industry conference in some sort of speaking capacity. In cases where an engagement involves a sponsor that may be covered in this blog, that fact will be disclosed in coverage as appropriate.

My corporate writing work usually consists of crafting research white papers about some aspect of technology or moderating Webcasts. In the event that my commentary (in written, audio or video form) mentions a company for which I have provided consulting advice, I will disclose that fact. However, there is no connection between these projects and topics that I cover in my blogs.

So ....
If I turn one of these back in without a full charge, do I get billed some outrageous surcharge for every watt of electricity it takes to fill it back up?

RE: Enterprise charges up electric-car rentals with Volt
I wouldn't put it past Enterprise to charge for every little thing.
