7 more companies reconsider commitment to forestry label

When seeking paper that was created according to sustainable forestry practices, these companies plan to align more closely with Forest Stewardship Council.

When it comes to certifying that paper is produced using environmentally sustainable milling and harvesting habits, there are still several labels to guide corporate sourcing decisions. But the balance of favor again appears to be shifting to the program being run by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) program.

ForestEthics, which is pushing for tougher forestry standards, reports that seven more companies have changed their stated commitment with respect to another certification, one put forth by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). In several cases, the companies simultaneously pledged to strengthen their ties to the FSC program.

According to ForestEthics, these are the latest companies to reconsider their commitment to SFI:

  • Sprint, which will use only FSC paper for billing statements moving forward
  • Norm Thompson Outfitters
  • King Arthur Flour, which will now use FSC paper for its catalogs
  • AT&T, which will give FSC paper purchasing preference
  • State Farm, also switching to FSC sourcing
  • U.S. Bank, concentrating on the FSC label
  • Comcast
