General Electric announced today that it has installed its 1,000th 2.5-megawatt wind turbine, which it began shipping in 2005.
The lucky turbine (and 239 others) goes to CEZ Romania and the 600-megawatt Fantanele Cogealac wind farm, Europe’s largest onshore wind project. The turbine can also be found at the quite large 845MW Shepherds Flat farm in Oregon.
The 2.5MW model now counts some 2 gigawatts of installed capacity worldwide — enough to power 1.4 million homes, the company says. Its claim to fame is more power output than other models.
Given the tough global economic climate, it’s good to see turbines still going up — particularly on the troubled Continent. Eastern Europe: the next great renewables frontier?
