Yahoo CEO wants to cut 80% of its mobile apps

By | February 13, 2013, 4:18 AM PST

Yahoo currently has between 60 and 70 apps - and that’s far too many, said Marissa Mayer, the company’s CEO, at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco on Tuesday. Some of those apps are not even Yahoo-branded.

But Mayer doesn’t want to cut mobile, she wants to strengthen it. Indeed the company’s chief executive, who has been focused on fortifying Yahoo’s mobile presence, said the company needs to get down to about a dozen apps. To that end, Yahoo has acquired three small start-ups - Stamped, OnTheAir, and Propeld, which was acquired yesterday.

These engineers will be tasked with developing a set of “core” Yahoo-branded apps that will reflect users’ “daily habits”–like sports scores, stock quotes, email, and news. By cutting the majority of the current offerings, the company hopes it will be able to focus its resources on apps that really matter to its users.
