Worldwide mobile advertising revenue: $11.4 billion in 2013

By | January 23, 2013, 1:29 PM PST

Thanks to the rise of smartphones and tablets worldwide, mobile advertising revenue is also growing.

According to a new report from Gartner, revenue from mobile advertising is expected to hit $11.4 billion worldwide this year, up from $9.6 billion in 2012. And by 2016 worldwide mobile ad revenue is expected to reach $24.5 billion.

“The mobile advertising market took off even faster than we expected due to an increased uptake in smartphones and tablets, as well as the merger of consumer behaviors on computers and mobile devices,” said Stephanie Baghdassarian, research director at Gartner. “Growth in mobile advertising comes in part at the expense of print formats, especially local newspapers, which currently face much lower ad yields as a result of mobile publishing initiatives.”

Asia/Pacific countries will see the most revenue from mobile advertising ($4.3 billion), followed by North America ($3.2 billion), and Western Europe ($1.6 billion).

As people spend more time on their devices, ad inventory is being created “at a pace considerably faster than most advertisers can shift their spending to the medium,” the report said.

Just the start
I think these numbers and future projections are just the tip of the iceberg. Consider the facts - The market for paid application downloads reached $8 billion in 2012 in the top 5 app platforms. This represents an increase of 27% compared to 2011 figures. BUT, average revenue for paid applications has decreased from US$ 26,720 in 2011 to 19,560 in 2012. People don't want to pay for apps. So for devs, that means mobile ads will pay the bills. Thank the lord above for mobile ad networks. As a developer, 2012 was my best year (Thank you Airpush) and all my apps were free. Way better than 2011. So for me, when I hear that Mobile World Congress is going to feature a lot of talk and news about mobile advertising, I'm all ears. I hope whatever announcements come out of Barcelona are legitimately awesome --- http://www.examiner.com/article/mobile-advertising-on-the-radar-for-mobile-world-congress-2013
