Tracking the history of the recurring revenue model

We may be bombarded with subscription services, opt-in incentives and direct debits — but the recurring revenue model is anything but modern.

Mobile technology and customer convenience may be King, but it’s not all about monthly-subscription music and film streaming services or digital gaming and e-coins. News outlets employ paywalls for an additional revenue stream, Naked Wines uses a monthly sign-up system to support local and unusual wine producers, and even lazy male shoppers can have everything from razors to condoms dropped at their door every month.

In reality, it all had to start somewhere.

Cloud-based subscription billing management company Aria Systems has compiled an easy-to-digest history of this business practice — traveling from periodical subscriptions to Netflix, Amazon and Zynga. Interested? View the infographic below:
