The Morning Briefing: The state of food in 2012

By | December 17, 2012, 12:20 AM PST

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about the state of food production in 2012.

1.) Study: People are living longer, but not healthier. A new study published in the medical journal Lancet finds the world’s population on average is enjoying an extended life expectancy.

2.) Doctor goes on an epic rant against the food industry. When Yoni Freedhoff, a doctor and professor at the University of Ottawa, was uninvited to a food industry breakfast three days before it was slated to happen, he got a little upset.

3.) Is economic strain fueling obesity in Europe? Concern is growing that the economic crisis gripping Europe may be changing shopping and eating habits.

4.) Enough to go round but millions still starve. Food has never been such a global issue. Some 1.5bn overweight and obese adults share the planet with 870m chronically hungry people, and governments are grappling with the same challenges: how to produce more food from less land, slash waste and reduce price volatility, while battling erratic climate patterns.

5.) Top health news of 2012: From zombie attacks to soda-no-more. The year 2012 brought plenty of health news that caught everyone’s attention. From health care politics and zombie attacks, to scary national and global disease epidemics.
