The Morning Briefing: Nuclear power

By | December 4, 2012, 12:39 AM PST

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about nuclear power.

1.) Tsunami aftermath: Country weighs greener options after Fukushima. A Japanese government survey in July found 47 per cent of respondents wanted to phase out nuclear power generation by 2030.

2.) Russia to finance Turkey’s first nuclear power plant. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that his country would finance the total cost of Turkey’s first nuclear power plant.

3.) Chinese firm in illegal nuclear exports to Pakistan. A Chinese government-linked company has pleaded guilty to illegally exporting high-performance coatings from the U.S. to a nuclear power plant in Pakistan.

4.) Russian nuclear agency Rosatom plans fast reactors. Rosatom is to build a fast neutron reactor that it hopes will lead to a new wave of clean and commercially viable power stations.

5.) Nuclear power whistleblowers charge federal regulators with favoring secrecy over safety. Whistleblowers have accused the NRC of being both disconcertingly sluggish and inappropriately secretive about severe — and in one case, potentially catastrophic — flood risks at nuclear plants that sit downstream from large dams.
