The Morning Briefing: Mobile communication growth

By | September 18, 2012, 12:25 AM PDT

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about mobile communication growth.

1.) Mobile growth leads to malware surge, McAfee says. Many recently discovered threats update old tactics. Android devices the most popular targets.

2.) 3.5 GHz spectrum sharing effort could take years to produce results. The FCC’s plan work to open up frequencies in the 3.5 GHz band is all about small cells and spectrum sharing, the latter being a concept that does not excite many operators, and it could take years before carriers are able to use any of the targeted frequencies.

3.) Southeast Asia’s mobile phones market grew by 24 percent. High consumer demand for smartphones and basic feature phones in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines brought the total worth of the mobile phone sector to more almost $137 billion.

4.) PTCL’s use of illegal 3G spectrum causing $300 million loss to govt. Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL)’s blatant violation of Spectrum Regulations, Competition Laws and continued illegal use of costly 3G wireless spectrum is not only causing huge losses of more than $300 million to government exchequer but destroying the broadband competition.

5.) Goodspeed is a smartphone sized device that enables flat data fees while abroad. Consumers don’t like paying for roaming, and companies are sick of looking at inflated cellphone bills whenever their employees go abroad. Could this device help?
