The Morning Briefing: LED lighting

By | October 5, 2012, 12:12 AM PDT

The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reding about LED lighting uses.

1.) Flameproof LED light to improve safety of mineworkers. Flameproof lighting supplier Azolite, now a division of industrial plugs manufacturer Powermite, has manufactured a new flameproof light-emitting diode (LED) light for use in underground mining to improve safety and efficiency.

2.) IKEA Chief: We’re Leading America’s LED Lighting Revolution. IKEA is setting out to change the way you light your home, one bulb at a time.

3.) Study: NZ’s lethal roads lack light. Driving at night is almost three times more dangerous in New Zealand than in other developed countries because of poor street lighting, new research says.

A paper that will be presented at the Australasian Road Safety Research, Policing and Education Conference in Wellington says brightening streets with more-luminous LED lights could reduce after-dark road deaths and injuries by 35 per cent.

4.) Miami Tower to conserve energy with new LED lighting system. The Miami Tower in downtown Miami has been retrofitted with a new exterior LED lighting system to reduce energy costs and carbon dioxide emissions.

5.) How to make LED lighting mainstream: Make it a service. LED lighting, though, expensive, is supposed to reduce energy use and electric bills for its owner over time. Startup Digital Lumens is looking at doing more than selling its smart LED lighting equipment — it plans to sell it as a service, too.
