The Morning Briefing: Carbon emissions

By | November 15, 2012, 12:24 AM PST

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about carbon emissions.

1.) Global carbon emissions climbed to a record last year, IWR says. Global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels rose 2.5 percent to a record last year on surging pollution in China, Germany’s IWR research institude said.

2.) The energy policy conflict at the heart of government. Decarbonisation of electricity must be delivered at any cost, but the U.K. Treasury and Decc are exploring fundamentally different questions.

3.) California to hold first carbon emission permit sale. California is set to hold its first sale of carbon emissions permits — an experiment that it hopes will serve as a model for other US states and the federal government.

4.) EU carbon market needs quick fix and deep reform. The European Union must agree by the end of this year on a stop-gap measure to tackle the virtual collapse of its main instrument for cutting carbon emissions, the bloc’s climate boss said on Wednesday.

5.) Carbon emissions make satellites move faster. It’s a non-intuitive consequence of CO2 emissions and climate change.

CO2 and smog
Why when carbon emissions are talked about they always refer to CO2 and everyone uses the same pictures.... city drowned in SMOG.
Smog is hydrocarbons not CO2, we're talking about the physical dirt" that is ejected out of the exhaust pipe of an engine. CO2 is a good thing, the tree's and other plant life love it. Get rid of the smog, aka: hydrocarbons and there will be enough light for the plants to process the CO2 via photosynthesis.

CARBON FOOTPRINT REALLY?!!?
Nothing should be said to the public about stopping the carbon emissions until people like Al Gore and our government(president) stops leaving a footprint larger than the US itself. People who believe it's the "people's" or our government's place to stop this are only kidding theirselves. It is what it is and it's to late to stop; it is not all our fault, governments lead the way in leaving; making the carbon. Maybe they should walk and ride bikes around the HUGE buildings in which they work?(LOL)

My personal carbon pledge...
...has always been to have a carbon footprint less than Al Gore's. So far, it's been an incredibly easy goal to meet. Perhaps everyone should try.

On the other hand, perhaps Al Gore is helping to prevent the onset of the next ice age...
