"The Morning Briefing" is SmaertPlanet's daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we're reading about biofuel research and opinion.

.) Chevron VP: forget cellulosic biofuel, build better cars. The oil industry is mounting a concerted push to roll back biofuel mandates, both in Washington and Sacramento.

.) Which biofuels can capture our transportation market? In terms of energy use, light-duty vehicles account for over 58 percent of the 27,600 trillion BTU used for transportation in the U.S. each year. This is a huge market, representing roughly 5 times the annual output from the United States.

.) Aberdeen scientist aiming to turn sea water into biofuel for cars. Sea water is generally considered the enemy of most motorists, causing our beloved cars to corrode and rust in the salty sea air.

.) Effects of biofuels revealed. Concern is growing about finding alternatives to fossil fuels, but the negative impact of one of these -- biofuels -- may be greater than we first thought, say scientists.

.) Sugar-rich willow can boost biofuels' green credentials. Scientists have identified willow trees that yield five times as much sugar as ordinary varieties, "drastically reducing" the impact of biofuels.
