The Morning Briefing: A question of biofuels

By | February 7, 2013, 12:58 AM PST

“The Morning Briefing” is SmaertPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about biofuel research and opinion.

1.) Chevron VP: forget cellulosic biofuel, build better cars. The oil industry is mounting a concerted push to roll back biofuel mandates, both in Washington and Sacramento.

2.) Which biofuels can capture our transportation market? In terms of energy use, light-duty vehicles account for over 58 percent of the 27,600 trillion BTU used for transportation in the U.S. each year. This is a huge market, representing roughly 5 times the annual output from the United States.

3.) Aberdeen scientist aiming to turn sea water into biofuel for cars. Sea water is generally considered the enemy of most motorists, causing our beloved cars to corrode and rust in the salty sea air.

4.) Effects of biofuels revealed. Concern is growing about finding alternatives to fossil fuels, but the negative impact of one of these — biofuels — may be greater than we first thought, say scientists.

5.) Sugar-rich willow can boost biofuels’ green credentials. Scientists have identified willow trees that yield five times as much sugar as ordinary varieties, “drastically reducing” the impact of biofuels.

#4 is a great link.
This is the side of biofuels proponents do not want to discuss.

The reality of what increased usage of biofuels has done and will do to the planet.

Even the UN has some honest people calling out the harsh negatives of biofuels.

Even Al Gore now repudiates biofuels...
...(at least when he's not on American soil) and admits that he only supported ethanol because he needed the votes to almost get elected.

Biofuels
Good to see some articles on the frivolity & dangers of 'biofuels'.

It would be nice if biofuels advocates studied thermodynamics along with the opportunities for subsidies.

Combustion is our problem, it has been our problem for over 100 years. Biofuels solve nothing.

Ma Nature didn't invent photosynthesis or plants to give us energy. Surprise!

And, any engine or fuel cell, etc. into which we dump anything to burn wastes half the energy content of the fuel at best. For combustion engines, 2/3 the chemical energy of their fuel & air intake is wasted as exhaust heat.

Then there's the environmental damage from biofuel production. The problem remains combustion. Photosynthesis is only about 7% efficient. Biofuel from plants nets less than 1% of the incoming solar energy as useful power in human-designed machinery.

Solar PV/hot-water, EVs, efficient storage and advanced nuclear are all anyone on Earth needs for thousands of years.
