The Morning Briefing: 4G networks

By | October 30, 2012, 12:22 AM PDT

“The Morning Briefing” is SmartPlanet’s daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we’re reading about 4G networks.

1.) Calls for 4G auction windfall to be invested In science and tech. A host of big names have backed a petition to get the government to spend the £4 billion it gets from the Ofcom-run 4G auction at the end of the year on science and technology.

2.) Ofcom’s 5G plans already under way after 4G launch. Britain starts rolling out high-speed 4G mobile internet on Tuesday even as the auction to make the service widespread gears up — but preparations are already under way to launch the next generation 5G service.

3.) FreedomPop launches market-disruptive 4G iPod touch sleeve. Transforming the touch sleeve into an iPhone, it provides users 500MB of free nationwide high-speed 4G every month.

4.) French telecoms to lift prices for 4G - report. French telecom operators will have to raise tariffs for the upcoming launch of 4G services, the head of the country’s main industry group said in an interview with daily Le Figaro on Monday.

5.) 4G overseas roaming on EE coming in 2013. At one point we thought we might have to wait years for super-fast data speeds, but EE, Britain’s first 4G network, launches today. Many countries have beaten us to 4G, so you might be wondering whether your shiny new 4G phone will be able to get 4G speeds when you go abroad.
